Hiking Trail
Route profile
Notice
In the tour planner we inform you under the tab "Current info" about temporary route changes, closures and detours.
In the northeast, liquid lava once flowed from the Pfahlberg volcano. Today, the eroded volcanic cone at 346 metres above sea level is the highest point of the circular hiking trail. In the Rainstück pit directly on the edge of the town, clay was mined in both underground and open-pit mining. At the northern edge of Nauort, there is a panoramic point with a wide view into the Westerwald. An information board explains the geological processes that shaped today’s landscape. To the south, the GeoRoute leads into the deeply incised Brexbachtal in the slate mountains. Numerous striking rock formations give the valley its wild character and offer insights into the geology of the Westerwald. At the viewpoint on the Teufelsberg, an information stele explains the geology and raw materials of the surrounding area.
From the A 3 motorway exit in Ransbach-Baumbach, first drive towards Ransbach-Baumbach town centre. From there, there are signs to Nauort.
You can park for free at the starting point. Sports field, 56237 Nauort
As a GeoRoute in the National GEOPARK Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus, the hiking trail is marked with the green GEOROUTE sign on a white background.
The start and finish is the parking lot at the sports field in Nauort. From here, a short section goes through the streets of Nauort past the barbecue hut and then continues on a gravel path into the forest. Hiking steadily downhill through the forest, you come across a small forest lake, and behind it, the path sharply turns left and uphill on a small footpath. The GeoRoute now leads into the idyllic Brexbachtal with the viewpoint on the rugged Teufelsberg. Through the valley of the Nauorter Flösschen, it goes from the valley floor with its rushing Brexbach stream uphill again to Caan. At the edge of town, high above the Sayntal, the hiking trail now leads into the Caaner Schweiz. Those who do not want to hike narrow paths along rock cliffs can take a yellow-marked shortcut to the Caan barbecue hut here. Over the GeoTop Pfahlberg, the volcano of Caan, it goes back to Nauort. At the edge of town, a GeoBlick offers a wide view into the Westerwald.
Wear sturdy footwear as well as weather-appropriate, practical clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun. Please wear suitable hiking shoes for the path that provide sufficient support even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths. Take enough fluids with you, as there are not always places to stop for refreshments. Especially in autumn, you should also be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You must expect such path impairments if you undertake a hike. Although the path is consistently very well marked, you should always carry a suitable hiking map for safety reasons.
This is a path with medium difficulty level, which can be easily walked with sturdy footwear.
Special experience points are the Teufelsberg with a view into the Brexbachtal, the rugged rock cliffs of the Caaner Schweiz, and the Pfahlberg volcano. From the GeoBlick at the edge of Nauort, the view extends over wide parts of the Westerwald.
