The varied W1 combines the Wiedweg and WesterwaldSteig with wonderful views and beautiful forest trails. It leads us past Walburg Castle, built by manufacturer Rosbach modeled on and with original parts from the Waldnieler Castle (not open to visitors as it is privately owned). By the lovely Wied, a small detour to the Kreuzkapelle of the Franciscans, built in 1694, is worthwhile.

From the parking lot, we follow the WesterwaldSteig/W1 access path straight ahead to the Wied and then go 300 m to the right. Here, we cross left over the pedestrian bridge to the restaurant Nassen's Mühle and the Hotel Breitbacher Hof. We follow the path to the right along the Wied until we reach the main road. Now we go a short way uphill to the left toward Over, until we turn into the forest on the opposite side. We hike on the W1 through the forest and back down to the Wied. Before the bridge, we turn left and follow the Wiedweg/W1 toward Roßbach. We pass two shelters, cross the Wallbach, and follow the gentle ascent to the left until we turn left again back toward Waldbreitbach. Here, we go up the hill past Walburg Castle and continue on the WesterwaldSteig / W1 with beautiful panoramic views. We pass another shelter and come back down the forest path (start of the hike). On the other side of the road, this time we follow a small forest trail until we turn left onto the bridge and cross the Wied. Here, a detour to the Kreuzkapelle (visible on the right side) is worthwhile. On the W1, the path then leads us left along the Wied back to the parking lot.

Kreuzkapelle Waldbreitbach from 1694
In the 19th century, it served as a residence for the founders of the Franciscan Order and the founder of the Franciscan Sisters for a time. Since 1925, it has been owned by the Hausener Franciscan brothers.
