Hiking Trail
Route profile
Notice
In the tour planner we inform you under the tab "Current info" about temporary route changes, closures and detours.
The trail marking No. 13 leads over Siegener Straße, which is crossed at the town exit, into Bahnhofstraße up to the turnoff into Mühlenweg. Here, on a former mill path where grain was once transported on donkey backs to the mills, you come across the Mittelziegenfurter Mill on the Elbbach. The small river comes from the Westerwald and flows into the Lahn near Limburg. The property located to the right behind the bridge (Ober-Ziegenfurter Mill, today Hirsenmühle) houses the “Dan-Casriel-Institute” for psychotherapeutic treatments. The naming of the three (Lower/Middle and Upper) Ziegenfurter mills refers to the flow direction of the water and names the places where the stream could be crossed by goats and sheep through fords. Straight ahead you reach the Maria-Hilf Chapel situated on a hill under old linden trees, a place of Marian devotion over 200 years old. Through a small forest, you reach a natural meadow valley with a view of the “Lochmühle,” a former grain mill with a family tradition since 1811. Those wishing to spend farm holidays are in the right place here, as are camping and fishing enthusiasts. After a comfortable break, the route returns. Passing the Roman Aumühle, you reach the federal road for crossing after approx. 2 km, to return to the parking lot via Waldstraße.
A train connection is possible to Niederzeuzheim.
A train connection to Oberzeuzheim is NOT available.
Parking spaces are available at the multipurpose hall in Oberzeuzheim.
From Oberzeuzheim into the Elbbach valley and back.
Wear sturdy footwear as well as weather-appropriate, practical clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun.
Bring sufficient fluids. There are not always places to stop for refreshments.
Please wear hiking boots suitable for the trail that give you enough support even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
If you think certain sections of the trail are not accessible to you, you should avoid them. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery passages.
Especially in autumn, pay attention to the fact that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You must expect such obstacles when hiking.
Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always carry a suitable hiking map for safety reasons.
At the Lochmühle, you can take a relaxed break with a cold drink while the children can play energetically on the large playground by the Elbbach riverbank.
