RWW 4: Hadamar

Description

Starting from the starting point, the path initially follows the RWW 2 along the large fishing pond, before turning right at the signpost onto a paved farm road parallel to the forest. For about 400 meters, the path runs on Hundsänger Straße, then crosses it and leads onto a field path. The name of the local Landsteiner Hof points to the Landstein, which nearby marked the border between Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. Turn right and pass the “Schnepfenhäuser Hof”. Once one of the most stately estates in the Hadamar district, it is now part of the Vitos Clinic. Then you reach a war memorial in the form of a basalt cross. Here, on the east side of the “Hoheholzkapelle” lying in front, hundreds of soldiers who died of typhus in the Hadamar hospital after the Battle of Leipzig in winter 1813/14 were buried in mass graves. In front of the chapel, built in 1699 by Prince Franz Alexander, there is an opportunity to rest. Before its construction, there was a wayside shrine at this spot, which was the destination for field processions for many years. The path then leads past the cemetery of the memorial site on the Mönchsberg, where about 14,500 people were murdered during the euthanasia crimes of the Second World War. The memorial commemorates the victims and provides valuable historical education and political education for children, young people and adults through guided tours, project and study days, theatre workshops, and thematic cultural events. You then cross the main road again and finally return to the starting point via a beautiful birch-lined path.

Wear sturdy footwear as well as weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun.

Take enough fluids with you. There are not always places to stop for refreshments.

Please wear suitable hiking boots that give you enough traction even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.

If you think certain sections are not walkable for you, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery passages.

Particularly in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves can hide uneven ground, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You must expect such path impairments if you go hiking.

Although the path is continuously very well marked, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable hiking map with you.
