Naturdenkmal Seitenstein

Brief description

The natural monument Seitenstein, which is 496.5 meters above sea level, is a legendary basalt outcrop

Detailed description

The natural monument Seitenstein, at 496.5 m above sea level, is located in the district of Hellenhahn-Schellenberg. It is a basalt formation approximately 25 m high, with a circumference of around 200 m.

Currently, for safety reasons, the Seitenstein cannot be admired or climbed up close. However, the WesterwaldSteig and the local hiking trails provide a safe view of the natural monument, and a photo frame is conveniently placed.

The Seitenstein surpasses the two Wolfsteine in the district of Bad Marienberg in size and dimensions. An inner and an outer ring wall surround the Seitenstein, the contours of which are still clearly visible on the western side. The exact significance of the two ring walls is not well known. However, it is believed that this was a Celtic cult site.

According to a legend, dwarves used to dwell at the Seitenstein. A citizen from Pottum named Hans Doll once passed by the Seitenstein on his way to Rennerod. The dwarves had just spread their treasures of gold, silver, and precious stones in the sunlight, glittering and sparkling. Then a voice called out: “Hans Doll, Hans Doll, fill your hands and pockets!”. Considering the vast treasures and his small pocket, he ran as fast as he could back home and returned with a large sack. However, when he got back to the Seitenstein, the dwarves and all their treasures had disappeared, and he stood there with empty hands.
