Ketzerstein

Detailed description

The basalt blocks of the Ketzerstein near Liebenscheid-Weißenberg have a quite strange property: Anyone who relies on their compass here deviates from the right path.

At the Ketzerstein, it is always north, no matter from which direction you come. Witchcraft? No, there is a simple explanation: The high iron content of the rock confuses every compass needle.

We are as delighted as children by this peculiar phenomenon, hopping around the stone witnesses of past volcanic activity with the compass in hand. If someone had observed us a few hundred years ago, they might have thought our strange contortions were pagan rituals. However, the Ketzerstein is probably not a pagan sacrificial altar, as is often assumed. Its name is more likely derived from a border crossing, also called “Katze,” to the freedom of Liebenscheid. It might also have gotten its name from the nearby desolation “Katzenhausen.” But the fact that straying is sometimes human is aptly demonstrated by the trick with the compass needle.
