Altenkirchen - AK cycling route 4 "View over Altenkirchen"

Description

From Altenkirchen, the route goes to Almersbach with its noteworthy church - a late Romanesque, flat-roofed pillar basilica from the 12th century. A small detour there is worthwhile.
Then we cycle comfortably through the Wied Valley to Schöneberg, where a small castle is said to have once existed in the current church area. Past the Wiedscala program cinema in Neiterschen (formerly a water mill), we now ascend into the Altenkirchen state forest. The route begins with an impressive hollow way, whose formation is due to intensive path use for wood and stone transport (former ore mine "Emma").

We travel through two small valleys and reach Fluterschen. Behind an outlying farmstead, we find to the right the magnificent "Panorama View Raiffeisenland". An information board explains what can be seen from there.

Via Oberwambach, the route descends to Amteroth in the Almersbach valley and then climbs one last time to the Bismarck Tower, which was built in 1914 from local rock. At the memorial, we stop briefly one last time and enjoy the view of the town from here.

Approach

Altenkirchen can be reached from Cologne and Limburg via the A3 and B8, from Wissen and Neuwied via the B256, and from Herborn via the B414.

Public transport

Via the Sieg line (Cologne/Bonn - Windeck/Au - Siegen) and a change in Au, you can reach Altenkirchen by train. From Siegen, you can even get to us without changing trains.
From the direction of Frankfurt, there is also the possibility to reach Altenkirchen by regional train via Limburg.

Directions

Direction Fluterschen along the L 267, at the hiking car park in Almersbach turn right down to the Wied (detour to the church in Almersbach), in the Wied Valley turn left to Schöneberg and continue downstream to Neitersen, before the Wied bridge turn left past the cinema, up a hollow way towards the forest until a wide forest path crosses, turn left here, after about 230 m take the slightly right-branching forest path, down to the meadow valley of the Breibach, turn left to the street, then right uphill to the L 267, cross L 267, at the town entrance of Stürzelbach turn left, follow "Waldstrasse" to the agricultural cross path, turn left to Mahlert, follow the town sign for Fluterschen, at the bus stop turn right up Brunnenstraße to Steimeler Straße, a few meters right, then left into Amselweg, high path through forest area to Oberwambach, about 300 m right, left through the street "Vor dem Gebrannten" to Amteroth, behind the bridge turn left over Almersbach, follow the agricultural path sloping diagonally uphill for a few meters, left Höhenstrasse to the Bismarck Tower, turn right here and downhill back to the starting point.

Tips

At the panoramic viewpoint near Fluterschen, there is a small shelter, ideal for unpacking your picnic basket and enjoying the wide view.
