The approximately 50-kilometer route gives me time for sights and breaks. Already in Hachenburg, I can visit the Westerwald Landscape Museum, a small open-air museum. It invites a journey into the past. I also take a look at the historic old town with its romantic lanes, the small boutiques, the castle, and the castle garden. Then it starts: From Hachenburg station, I take a wide arc to the west and south. On hot days, the long forest stretches behind Wahlrod are a delight. Shortly before Maroth, the forest lake offers a wonderful refreshment. After this rest, I continue to Sessenbach. The local planetarium with an observatory offers guided tours by appointment.
A few kilometers further, I reach Grenzau and take the short path through the forest up to the castle ruins. A few hundred meters further, I meet the German Limes Cycle Route, which takes me to the Zugbrücke Hotel with restaurant.
By train to the station in Hachenburg.
My starting point is the Hachenburg station. I initially follow Bahnhofstraße and am guided a little through the town. Then I take a wide arc over field paths towards the northwest and west until the route runs south near Hattert and its several subdistricts. Here I am on the K 10, called the main street in the towns. Wherever possible, the path continues on field paths alongside. Shortly before Marzauer Mill, the path sharply turns right, passes through a small forest, and then follows Mühlenstraße to Wahlrod. Now it goes for a long time through the forest, then I cross the K 10 in this forest area and arrive at Roßbach. Here I can order a tasty meal at Pizza Venere if I am hungry. The path first zigzags a little, then continues straight south through the Maroth forest. Passing the forest lake—where I can also take a break—I reach Maroth, shortly after Marienhausen and Goddert. One town further, I go directly through Selters in the Westerwald. Along the forest edge, I reach Oberhaid, cross the A 3, and arrive through various villages and in a zigzag to Sessenbach. Now it is only a few kilometers to Grenzau. This first stage is quite manageable, the more noticeable and stronger climbs await only in later stages. Those traveling with a pedelec or e-bike naturally handle the climbs much more easily.
Good basic fitness required.
For the WW1 route, I should definitely pack swimwear; here as in the first section, there is a nice swimming spot. A pair of binoculars is also recommended.
