Description

In Höhr-Grenzhausen, I start the day with a visit to one of the many ceramics workshops or the Westerwald Ceramics Museum. The town is the main center of the ceramics industry, known as Kannenbäckerstadt. In the so-called Kannenbäckerland, the largest clay deposits in Europe are found, and the beautiful gray stoneware with blue ornaments, produced here since the 16th century, is widely known.

The area was also influenced by the Romans. For example, near Hillscheid I come across a Limes tower. The watchtower WP 1/68 was rebuilt in 1994 on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the community of Hillscheid according to the latest archaeological findings, and the interior has been designed as a museum.

At Gackenbach, I take a break at the wildlife and leisure park. As an animal lover, I see quite a lot here, including the two brown bears Purzel and Sally, as well as red or fallow deer, foxes, but also rabbits and geese. There is also a summer sledding run and a kiosk. In the middle of the forest, just before Großholbach, I come across the so-called "Bildches Eich," a Marian memorial site dating back to around 1830. It is also interesting that some deserted villages are on my route, i.e. places or fields abandoned by people.

Approach

From the A 48, exit Höhr-Grenzhausen, near the Dernbacher Triangle (A3) and the Koblenz interchange (A 61), you can reach Grenzau in less than five minutes.

Public transport

By train:

Koblenz Hbf, ICE station Montabaur (each 15 km). Taxi recommended. Regular bus connection (line 7/7A) from Koblenz Hbf to Höhr-Grenzhausen (end stop 1.5 km from the hotel).

Directions

I follow the German Limes Cycle Route for a while before turning sharply right shortly before the K 117 and continuing my way along the edge of the forest. I cross the forest and come across the Limes Cycle Route again, turn left and follow it on the K 117. I pass through Höhr-Grenzhausen, reach Hillscheid, and ride in a wide arc through the forest where I leave the Limes Cycle Route heading to Neuhäusel. Then follow Eitelborn, Arzbach and after some zigzags and a long ascent Welschneudorf. It continues southeast through the forest to Hübingen. Shortly before the town, I reach the southernmost point of the entire WW1 loop and head north again. It goes leisurely over Horbach to Gackenbach, the route gradually descends again. After Giershausen I cycle through the beautiful nature reserve and encounter a town again only at the edge of Großholbach. Passing Kleinholbach, I reach the Hotel-Restaurant Freimühle, the Eisenbachtal campsite, and the historic Landhotel Studentenmühle.
