Description

Final spurt: At the Neuerburg campsite in Niederbreitbach, I set off for the last stage along the Wied at the southern edge of the lower Wiedtal.

On the way, I am particularly impressed by the vantage point over the Wied loop at Bürder. Up to Melsbach it goes partly on narrow paths towards the goal. On the way, views of the curved Wied open up again and again. Here it is worth making a detour to the Laubach waterfall, which plunges over 20 meters in several stages down the valley. Together with other marked trails, I reach the imposing Altwied Castle, which rises picturesquely above the Wied. The ancestral castle of the Counts of Wied is a real photo highlight and can be visited (only) from the outside. The district of Altwied welcomes me with its pretty half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries and the Gothic St. Antonius village church. In the district of Niederbieber, the route changes once again to the Wied side (intersection "In derLach"/"Am Steg"). From here on, I follow the "Blue W on yellow background" signs to the mouth of the river. Irlich, the destination of my tour, belongs to the city of Neuwied since 1969. Here the Wied flows into the Rhine and my hike ends. Finally, I treat myself to a visit to the public castle park of Neuwied, from which you can also get to the beautiful dike shore promenade and I can enjoy the sunset.

Directions

At the Neuenburg campsite in Niederbreitbach, I set off for the last stage along the Wied. The path changes after 800 meters into a natural path, which I follow for 200 meters until I cross the river on the left and turn right after 200 meters onto a gravel path. I follow it for 900 meters and directly come across a Wied loop, which I follow for 1.2 kilometers, taking a look at the Bürder Lady Chapel. My path goes uphill and changes from a path to a natural path. I take a sharp left and continue my hike uphill for another 500 meters before turning left downhill again along a nature trail. After 900 meters I reach the village street of Datzeroth, turn left and immediately right again onto a nature trail, which after a few meters joins the village street again. I turn right and immediately left again, following the path into the forest. This runs parallel to the river through the wooded nature park Rhine-Westerwald and changes after 1.8 kilometers into a nature path. Here, too, I walk after minor detours again parallel to the Wied and reach after 1.3 kilometers the Laubachsmühle. I follow the river loops 1.6 kilometers, past Melsbach, to the road to Altwied. There I leave the castle ruins on the right and walk a few meters further and over the bridge to the other side of the Wied. I turn left and walk a bit along the road "Am Brückenstein" and then on a nature trail parallel to the Wied for 1.8 kilometers to Segendorf. There I cross the bridge to the Austraße and turn right immediately afterwards. On my left is Niederbieber and on the opposite side of the river Rodenbach. After one kilometer I change the river side again and walk further to the left to Nordhausener Straße. After 100 meters I keep to the left and follow the Wied for about one kilometer along a natural path and a trail, past Nodhausen, until I reach a gravel path. The path is lined with meadows, the residential areas of Irlich begin on the right and I can see the Wied. After one kilometer I turn left and continue past the Phalwiese directly to the river. There I keep to the right and walk the last 900 meters to Brunnenstraße, turn right and at Schultheiß-Damen-Straße turn left. After 300 meters I come directly upon the Rhine and have reached my destination.
