Description

Experience the Westerwald on one of the Top Trails of Germany. Broad paths for relaxing alternate with narrow trails for balancing. Many surprises await along the way. Sometimes it is a quaint stream valley, sometimes a stately monastery with an exciting history, prehistoric excavations and dripstone caves, or a cozy inn.

You can arrive by car, bus, or train.

Public transport

Arrival by bus and train is possible to Herborn station and Bad Hönningen station.

Herborn: Free of charge: city parking lot (Schießplatz), commuter parking lots at the station/bus terminal

Lush meadows, green forests, fragrant wind: this is how you experience and enjoy the Westerwald. Right through this gem of nature runs the WesterwaldSteig, a top-class hiking trail that delights with every step over a length of 235 km.

You will walk through six different natural areas: the Hessian Westerwald, the High Westerwald/Wiesensee, the Altenkirchen Westerwald, the Kroppach Switzerland, the Rhein-Westerwald/Wiedtal Nature Park, and the Rhein-Westerwald Nature Park. These attract with pure nature and a wealth of scenic, cultural, and historical sights. The hiker follows in the footsteps of ancestors by visiting castles, fortresses, and monasteries and strolls through the interesting, historic town centers of cities and villages. The WesterwaldSteig welcomes its guests as a hiking trail through lush green nature and offers variety and adventure along the entire route. Hiking, experiencing, and relaxing are realized step by step with the WesterwaldSteig. For recovery of body and soul, the path leads you through lush green valleys up to airy, wooded heights. Whether sporty hiking, family hiking, panoramic hiking, or pleasure hiking, the WesterwaldSteig fulfills the passion of every hiking enthusiast. Here, the journey is the destination.

Safety instructions

We inform you about detours, path closures, or other safety notices on the WesterwaldSteig for the respective stage!

  • Wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and moisture or heat and sun.
  • Carry sufficient liquids. Refreshment options are not available everywhere.
  • Please wear hiking boots suitable for the path, giving you enough support even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven trails.
  • If you consider certain sections of the path impassable, you should bypass them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can be muddy and slippery.
  • Especially in autumn, note that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You must expect such path impairments when hiking.
  • Although the path is continuously very well marked, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable hiking map.
