In the tour planner we inform you under the tab "Current info" about temporary route changes, closures and detours.
First, in Langendernbach on Bahnhofstraße, I admire the imposing church lime tree. A few kilometers further, in Westerburg, I can already take my first break in a café or inn. But first, I visit the castle in the upper town including the castle church from the 16th century. Next, I head to the Westerwald Lake District with its seven lakes. Here I like to take a small detour to the Dreifelder Weiher, the largest lake. In Dierdorf, I rest in the former castle park before admiring the impressive mausoleum of the Prince of Wied-Runkel. The route leads me further along the Limes with its fortification remains.
In the Sayn cultural park in Bendorf-Sayn – there is a unique natural and memorial landscape. Embedded in the charming cultural landscape between the Brex and Saynbach, the Sayn Castle including the “New Museum”, the enchanting Butterfly Garden with the most beautiful butterflies from all over the world, the princely castle park, the memorial area Sayner Hütte with new staging of the blast furnace, the Sayn climbing forest, the castle as well as Sayn Abbey, the Heins Mill museum, and the Roman tower at the UNESCO World Heritage Limes form a unique symbiosis of tangible history that has been preserved to this day.
Via A48 to exit 11-Bendorf/Neuwied. Continue on B42 towards Neuwied to exit Dierdorf/Bendorf-North/Sayn
Coming from the west via A3: exit 37-Dierdorf, take L266 to B413 in Kleinmaischeid, continue on B413
I start in Langendernbach at the intersection of Brückenstraße/Bühlstraße and ride on Brückenstraße, which becomes Gemündener Straße, northwest out onto the fields. A sharp bend directs me more to the north and finally west to Gemünden. In good weather, I enjoy a wide view towards the Taunus from the first hill. In larger arcs, it goes to Westerburg. Heading towards Kaden, I ride on the former railway track and later join the Westerwald-Lahn and Wied cycle paths. The route now shows dynamic curves, with the path gaining elevation. I look forward to the Westerwald Lake District with the Dreifelder Weiher. Smaller villages such as Herschbach, Freirachdorf, Maroth, and Wienau follow until I reach Dierdorf. Then I cross the deep valley of the narrow Isenbach and soon find myself on the Limes heights. Now it goes steeply downhill onto the German Limes cycle path. It takes me directly to Bendorf, where I want to visit a sculpture courtyard including the gallery “Behind Lenchen’s House”.
Very good physical condition required.
For bags and backpacks on a cycling tour, not only the back offers space – the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed across several parts of the body and bicycle. Riding wind, rain, or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can be best avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day route, you should always have suitable change clothing at hand to be prepared for any eventuality. Apart from other important equipment items, the necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speeds, it's easy to take a wrong turn on a cycling tour: traditional and modern aids such as a cycle map or GPS device serve as orientation. You should also always have a small emergency kit with you.
In good weather, I pack swimwear so that I can go swimming in the Dreifelder Weiher. There is also catering available here.
