Description

In Westerburg, a traditional costume museum and the charming Erlebnisbahnhof Westerwald, including a great railway poster exhibition, await you. At the Erlebnisbahnhof, you can watch the people every Saturday. The bike ride is 21 kilometers long and includes a substantial northwest loop, which I can literally skip, thus shortening the route. During my ride, I pass old quarries that indicate the former craftsmanship of the population. In the mentioned loop, I pass through the three pretty villages of Hölzenhausen, Bellingen, and Langenhahn. Here, I find several restaurants. In Langenhahn, I visit the Herz-Jesu Church. On my loop, I come across the Ailertchen airfield, which hosts a wonderful festival at Pentecost. The Liebfrauenkirche on Marienhöhe is also worth seeing. Now I am almost back in Westerburg again.

Approach

  • From Cologne direction (A3): At exit 40-Montabaur, take B255 towards Bad Ems/Bad Marienberg/Westerburg.
  • From Frankfurt direction (A3): Keep right, follow signs towards Gießen/Weilburg/B49 and continue on B49/B54.
  • From Siegen direction (B54): Take B255 via the A3/Köln/Koblenz/Montabaur/Hellenhahn-Schellenberg ramp.

Directions

I start right in the middle of Westerburg at the intersection of Bahnhofstraße/Querstraße. I enter the latter and continue north along Brückenstraße. After a while, I turn left to stay on it. On my right is the Hülsbach, before I orient myself to the left along the railway track. Through the industrial area, I finally reach the forest on the left and turn in behind the quarry. The path leads me on in gentle curves. If I want, I can immediately turn right and finish the loop route. Otherwise, I turn sharply left, then sharply right again and explore the three villages of Hölzenhausen, Bellingen, and Langenhahn. Finally, I reach the starting point of this nice northwest loop again. Now the loop continues east. Behind the Ailertchen airfield, I turn south. I ride on rural paths past Halbs and Hergenroth, pass the Liebfrauenkirche, and reach Westerburg again.

Safety instructions

Good basic fitness required.

Equipment

For bags and backpacks on a bike ride, not only the back offers space – the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed over several parts of the body and bike. Riding wind, rain, or sun can cause very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day tour, you should always have suitable change clothing on hand to be prepared for any eventuality. In addition to other important equipment, necessary tools and repair supplies should not be forgotten. At high speed, it is easy to take a wrong turn on a bike ride: Traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or a GPS device serve for orientation. You should also always have a small emergency kit with you.

Tips

From Hergenroth it is not far to the campsite at Wiesensee. In summer, it invites you to swim in its cool waters.
