Description

The landscape on my 13.5-kilometer moderate hike on the GeoRoute "Watzenhahner Riesen" is shaped by Westerwald basalt. On my path, I encounter countless rock formations like the GeoTop Watzenhahner Riesen.

At Kranstein, the GeoTop of the year 2020, between Willmenrod and Weltersburg, my route through the old forests around Watzenhahn begins, whose ridge rises northwest over the Limburg Basin. Impressive, legendary places and basalt formations accompany me on my hike. At many points, I can observe how nature has reclaimed the former basalt and clay extraction sites and provides significant habitats for rare animals and plants. From the basalt peak of the Weltersburg castle ruins, I have a spectacular GeoView over the entire Limburg Basin. The Wäller route "Watzenhahner Riesen," like the Wäller route "Basalt und Buntmetalle," carries the "entdeckertour" certificate.

Safety instructions

Take enough liquid with you.

Please wear hiking boots suitable for the trail, which also provide sufficient grip on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.

If you think certain sections of the path are not passable for you, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths may have muddy and slippery passages.

Especially in autumn, it should also be noted that fallen leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You must expect such path impairments when going on a hike.

Although the path is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable hiking map with you.
