Description

The location of the Rengsdorfer Land in the Rhine-Westerwald nature park - between the Rhine valley and the Westerwald plateau - occupies a special position as the “gateway to the Westerwald” or better said as the “Westerwald balcony”. It benefits from the wonderful panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and the Eifel, from the idyllic brook and meadow valleys and of course from the adjacent heights of the Westerwald. In this attractive piece of earth lies between the RheinSteig in Rengsdorf and the Westerwald-Steig in the adjacent Waldbreitbach the KLOSTERWEG, which guarantees a high adventure value for hiking and trekking fans over a length of approx. 18 km. It fulfills the requirements for premium hiking trails and is entitled to wear the GERMAN WALKING SEAL. The KLOSTERWEG not only crosses a fantastically beautiful landscape with wide views and rolling hills, with green meadows and shady forests, it also invites you to stop off on the right and left of the path in many ways.

Directions

The KLOSTERWEG starts in Rengsdorf at the St. Kastor Chapel in Friedrich-Ebert-Straße (exit towards Hardert; there is parking available there) and leads via the Rosenberg spa to the Römergraben natural monument. Above the grill hut we keep to the right and follow the signs to the newly built pedestrian bridge over the B 256. Now it goes down into the idyllic Laubach valley and past the Laubachswinkel refuge on the RheinSteig-Zuweg to Ehlscheid. When we arrive in Ehlscheid, we cross the well-tended spa park with its Kneipp facility. A restaurant geared towards hikers welcomes hikers. The Gommerscheider Höhe provides a wide view of the Malberg on the opposite side of the Wied. The Westerwald-Steig runs there. Now we descend through the game reserve of the prince zu Wied into the deep Dombach Valley, past the Rehberghütte and the Eichenhof to reach Kurtscheid. In Kurtscheid, the Holy Guardian Angel Church with the village fountain and the historical baptismal font attracts attention, but the church windows and the depiction of the archangels and the story of creation are also of particular beauty. We walk around the cemetery and marvel at the grandiose panorama of the Siebengebirge in the distance. Here we linger on the newly built tree benches and enjoy the wonderful view. The monastery path now leads down into the Fockenbachtal, and we feel transported into the Allgäu with the hilly meadow landscapes of the Wiedtal. We pass the Neuerburg castle ruins and cross the Burgseifen in the direction of the Kelterhof. We walk for a short while along the Fockenbach, past the Mother Rosa memorial and climb to the right over a rocky hill towards Ackerhof and Clausberg up to Glockscheid. Here we are already at the first destination of the stage, the St. Marienhaus monastery and are rewarded with a wonderful view of the Wiedtal on the monastery mountain terrace. The creation path and the herb garden of the Waldbreitbach Franciscan Sisters are worth seeing here. In the further course the KLOSTERWEG runs parallel to the Wiedweg to the parish church "Maria Himmelfahrt" in Waldbreitbach (at Christmas time the largest natural root nativity scene in the world can be admired in the church). Here are the goal and the beginning at the same time. After crossing the Wied, we reach the Westerwald-Steig via the parking lot in the center of Waldbreitbach. If you still haven't had enough, you can hike left via the St. Josefshaus monastery in Hausen over the Malberg in the direction of Bad Hönningen or right to Roßbach and to the "Roßbacher Häubchen" - a "limitless" hiking pleasure. Of course, it also walks wonderfully in the other direction, i.e. from Waldbreitbach to Rengsdorf. The KLOSTERWEG is accessible all year round in both directions.
