The picturesque Eisenbach Valley is the starting point for exciting moments in the saddle. Today we follow the cycling signs via Klein- and Großholbach to Ruppach-Goldhausen, which welcomes us with a beautiful village church and points the way to the Goldhäuser Mill – whose millstones were already turning at the beginning of the 18th century. Staudt and Bannberscheid are the next destinations before we steer towards Leuterod on the finely gravelled path. Looking into the distance here, you notice the distinctive mountain ridge of Malberg, where remains of a prehistoric Celtic ring fort can still be discovered today. Through dense deciduous forest we cycle via Hosten to Siershahn. The Tonberg Museum offers deep insights into the extraction of this important raw material. Already visible from afar is the "Westerwald Cathedral" in Wirges. Opposite lies the fountain, decorated with glassblowers and potters, symbolizing the important economic sector of the community. We leisurely pedal to Dernbach with the Heilborn Chapel before the signs lead us to Montabaur.
The city’s eventful history can be traced back to the year 959. Even the nobility knew where to reside in dignity at that time. Archbishop Dietrich von Wied, who returned from the Holy Land in 1217, had the ruined castle – today’s Baroque palace – rebuilt and named the place Mons Tabor for its similarity to Mount Tabor in Israel. This became Montabaur. The sour spring at the Great Market in front of the neo-Gothic town hall bubbles along. Densely packed and lovingly restored, the historic half-timbered ensemble nestles beside it. Montabaur alone is worth a trip – because there is much to discover here. The old city wall, the Wolf Tower as well as the town church with its two mighty bell towers are just some highlights to admire. One last look back, and we pedal on towards Niederelbert. The detour to the biotope nature trail is worthwhile, as is a visit to St. Joseph's Church. Only a few kilometers separate us from the Gelbach Valley. Holler is adorned with a pretty village church, and Wirzenborn, picturesque in the Gelbach Valley, awaits with the pilgrimage church from the year 1498. A special jewel inside is the Wirzenborn image of grace, a Madonna dating back to the 14th century.
The rest break in the village pub "Wirzenborner Liss" with the adjoining motorcycle museum is really cozy. Motorized two-wheeler technology, collected by enthusiasts, pleases curious visitors here. A few more pedal strokes later, we find ourselves back in the middle of the forest, whose romantic paths guide us windingly through the Gelbach Valley to the "Bildches Eich". A charming small chapel situated in lush forest – a place where you can happily dangle your legs.
The route to Großholbach is pleasantly short, which is adorned with a “comital half-timbered house” and the last station before arriving back in the Eisenbach Valley.
