With a distance of about 55 kilometers, the VG round offers a varied combination of picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and sporting challenging sections. The route passes through all four local municipalities of the Verbandsgemeinde Asbach – Asbach, Buchholz, Neustadt (Wied), and Windhagen – inviting you to discover the diversity of the region on two wheels.

As a circular route, the trip can be started at any point on the track. A possible starting point is in Neustadt (Wied) at the parking lot next to the sports field.

It leads over gentle hills, through idyllic forests, and past blooming meadows towards Windhagen with its panoramic heights, further into the natural landscape around Buchholz with its moor areas, and back to the lively surroundings of Asbach and Neustadt (Wied).

Whether as a sporting challenge or a pleasurable exploration tour – the VG round combines nature, movement, and regional diversity into an unforgettable experience.

Passing Scharenberg and Rahms, you reach Strauscheid, where a short stop at the local cemetery is possible. The route continues via Wied and Oberhoppen to Kodden and the Wiedmühle, before going on via Steeg, the Fuchsbau and Wölsreeg to Unterelsaff, Elsaff, Mittelelsaff, and Oberelsaff.

From there, it continues via Hohn to Windhagen, past the church St. Bartholomäus and the Catholic community center. The route passes through the landscapes of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, through the Siebengebirge Nature Park and the towns of Stockhausen, Germscheid, Rauenhahn, and Muß. Then it goes through Unterelles, Diepenseifen, Sauerwiese, Krummenast and Oberelles before leading to Limberg, and finally to Buchholz (Westerwald) with the Buchholzer Moor, the Lökestein, and the Sauerwieser Heath.

From Buchholz, the route continues via Seifen, Krautscheid, and Wertenbruch to Eulenberg and Priestersberg, past the Bergisches Land Nature Park, to Kölsch-Büllesbach, Jungeroth, Mendt, and Irmeroth, before passing through Griesenbach, Bleckhausen, Elles, Hurtenbach, Limbach, Sessenhausen, Krumbach, Krumscheid, Altenhofen, Niedermühlen, Kescheid, and the Kapaunsmühle.

The last stage leads through Heide, Altenburg, past the St. Josef Chapel, the Kaltehöhe, the forest cemetery, the Ehrenstein castle ruins, the Rochus chapel, Eilenberg, Thalhof and Reeg, up to the local history museum "Bi et fröher wor" and the Christ Church, where the route ends.

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy footwear as well as weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wetness or heat and sun.

  • Bring enough fluids with you. There are not refreshment stops everywhere.

  • If you believe certain sections of the path are not passable for you, you should bypass them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.

  • Especially in autumn, pay attention to the fallen leaves which may conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You have to expect path impairments of this kind when undertaking a bike ride.

  • Although the path is very well marked continuously, you should always have a suitable bike map with you for safety reasons.

Equipment

For bags and backpacks on a bike ride, not only the back offers space – the weight of the equipment should preferably be distributed across several body and bike parts. Wind, rain, or sun can cause very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day route, you should always have appropriate change clothing at hand to be prepared for every eventuality. Besides other important equipment items, necessary tools and repair materials should not be forgotten. At high speed, it’s easy to take a wrong turn on a bike ride: traditional and modern aids like a bike map or a GPS device serve for orientation. You should always have a small emergency kit with you.
