Already at the start in Burbach, a first attraction awaits: the museum “Life and Work in Burbach” in the tithe barn of the Old Vogtei. Shortly thereafter, I visit the 700-year-old fortified church of Würrgendorf. Also worth seeing are the Holzhausen church from the 13th century, the half-timbered house “Fiesterhannes” from 1691, and the 200-year-old communal bakery. In Niederdresselndorf, there is a more than 250-year-old Protestant church right in the village center. Later, I come across Siegerland Airport, one of Germany's highest commercial airports (599 meters). Several disused mines follow, including the well-known Peterszeche and the Viktorsfeld mine. At the end, I check whether a service is currently taking place in the small forest chapel Eben-Ezer. Otherwise, I enjoy the wonderful nature of the Westerwald, which offers itself on the ride through North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. For example, I ride through the beautiful Buchhellertal nature reserve and numerous romantic Burbach villages. Both are embedded in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park.
Detailed information on travel times and connections can be found at www.bahn.de.
Parking spaces are available directly in front of the Römerpassage on Nassau Street as well as on Römer Street. In addition, there are further parking options available in the Burbach shopping center.
My ride starts at the town hall in Burbach. I head southeast, then follow several bends to Würrgendorf. A little further on, the path turns south and I cycle through idyllic green forests. I reach Holzhausen and Niederdresselndorf and pass through the long stretched Oberdresselndorf. From Niederdresselndorf, a branch of about 3.5 kilometers leads to Lützeln, where the oldest communal bakery of the Westerwald is located. I am in Hickengrund, an open landscape whose name hints at hedges. On gravel roads, the path gradually ascends and takes me behind Liebenscheid to the highest point of the route (616 meters). Via Lippe, I reach the Upper Buchhellertal with numerous disused mines. I also find the small forest chapel Eben-Ezer here. In a long descent with wonderful views, it goes through a meadow landscape to the north, then east, and I reach Burbach, my destination. For the 27 kilometers, I calculate around two hours without breaks.
For bags and backpacks on a bike ride, space is not only provided on the back – the weight of the equipment should preferably be distributed over several body and bike parts. Wind, rain, or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day tour, you should always have suitable change clothing on hand to be prepared for every eventuality. In addition to other important equipment items, the necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speed, you can quickly take a wrong turn on a bike ride: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or a GPS device serve for orientation. You should always also have a small emergency kit with you.
Occasionally, I visit the natural monument “Wildweiberhäuschen,” a rock formation south of Oberdresselndorf. According to legend, women lived here who liked to annoy people.
