The Neustädter Weg (N3) - From the Wied and Pfaffenbach valleys up to the heights of the Westerwald

Description

The path leads steadily uphill from the valleys and rewards with wide views over the Westerwald. Along the way, forests alternate with paths through churches and markets, following the Neustädter Weg. Along the path, you will repeatedly encounter small trails and side paths that invite further exploration. The scenery changes with the seasons: blooming meadows in spring, cool forest paths in summer, colorful hues in autumn, and clear long-distance views in winter.

Approach

The parking lot and the starting point are located next to the Catholic church in Neustadt (Wied).

Public transport

Take bus line 564 hourly to Margarita Square or to the evangelical church and start from there.

Free parking is available next to the church or down at the parking lot next to Misto's and the sports field. (Raiffeisenstraße 9, 53577 Neustadt (Wied))

Directions

The hike starts at the church in Neustadt. From here, you first walk a short distance through the town and pass by the Christuskirche. Then the path leads you gently uphill into the forest. On shady forest trails, you hike towards Oberetscheid. Behind the village, the path continues over a longer section through dense forest. Along the way, you pass the village of Dinkelbach. At the end of the forest section, you reach the outskirts of Etscheid. From there, you follow the path down to the Wied River, which accompanies you for a while. Finally, the circular route closes, and you return along the river to your starting point at the church in Neustadt.

Safety instructions

• Wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate, practical clothing that protects you from cold and wet conditions as well as heat and sun.
• Carry enough liquids. There are not always places to stop for refreshments.
• Please wear appropriate hiking boots on the trail that provide sufficient support even on slippery, steep, rocky, or uneven paths.
• If at any section of the trail you feel it is impassable for you, you should avoid it. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural trails can have muddy and slippery passages.
• Especially in autumn, keep in mind that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. Expect such trail impairments when hiking.
• Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always carry a suitable hiking map for safety reasons.

Hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.

Tips

Take a break on the many benches and enjoy the view.

At the end in Neustadt (Wied), you can stop for delicious food at Eiscafe Silberlöffel, Pizza Works, Misto's, Bei Valentino, or Khana Khazana.
