The region around Höhr-Grenzhausen and beyond is called the Kannenbäckerland because the largest clay deposits in Europe were once found here. From this, the well-known grey-blue Westerwald pottery was made. I therefore take time to visit the ceramics museum in Höhr-Grenzhausen. A few kilometers further, I see anglers trying their luck at the Erlenhofsee at the eastern end of Ransbach-Baumbach. Towards Montabaur, the yellow castle, the town’s landmark, already greets me from afar. It now serves as a training center and hotel. Still in Montabaur, I pass the Sauerbrunnen, whose water is drinkable. It tastes a bit sour because it contains plenty of carbonic acid and iron. In Wirzenborn, a special highlight awaits: the motorcycle museum, which presents treasures from seven decades. Even before I reach Großholbach, I come across Bildches Eich, a chapel that houses an old monument. The rest of the way leads me southeast through beautiful cultural and natural landscapes to Limburg an der Lahn with its cathedral.
Vallendar: via A48 to exit 11-Bendorf/Neuwied, continue on B42 towards Koblenz-East/Vallendar
Höhr-Grenzhausen: via A48 to exit 12-Höhr-Grenzhausen
The nearly 60-kilometer route starts at the Vallendar train station. I ride towards the market square, turn left, bypass the cemetery, and wind my way up from the Rhine Valley into the Westerwald heading north towards Höhr-Grenzhausen. On this first stage, there is no marking. From Höhr-Grenzhausen onwards, I am guided by signposts. I bypass the district of Grenzhausen as well as the motorway junction and approach the town of Ransbach-Baumbach with another small climb past Hilgert. Heading towards Ebernhahn, I cross the A3 and arrive at Wirges on a slightly downhill stretch. From here, I continue southeast to Montabaur. The route now takes me into the Nassau Nature Park, where I skirt Großholbach to the south and arrive in Kleinholbach. Between Nomborn and Nentershausen, another climb awaits. Then, for a longer time, it goes slightly downhill towards Elz and Limburg an der Lahn. Between Elz and Limburg, the marking is also missing, but the destination can easily be found.
Very good fitness required.
For bags and backpacks on a bike ride, not only the back offers space – the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed across several body and bike parts. Ride wind, rain, or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day route, you should always have suitable change clothes on hand to be prepared for any eventuality. Besides other important equipment items, necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speed, you can quickly take a wrong turn on a bike ride: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or a GPS device help with orientation. You should always also have a small emergency kit with you.
Bring a drinking cup for the Sauerbrunnen! Also, the potters of the many ceramics businesses in Höhr-Grenzhausen are happy to let you watch them at work.
