Description

The oldest water reservoir in Hachenburg is located on the path, and the Rothbach grotto invites you to pause and take a deep breath. Along the route, the so-called "summit cross" offers a wonderful view of Hachenburg with its baroque castle. Through the Altstadt district with the Hachenburg brewery, hop garden, and historic ice cellar, it goes back to the traditional old town with its Alten Markt and golden lion on the fountain. Here you can relax before going through the Burggarten back to the destination.

From Bad Marienberg (East): We leave Bad Marienberg via L294 and at the end of the street turn left onto B414. We follow this road through Kirburg and past Norken. After about nine kilometers, we leave B414 to the left onto L281, which we follow to Hachenburg.

From Altenkirchen (West): We drive via B414 to the roundabout before Hachenburg, where we leave it at the first exit towards Hachenburg onto B413. At the first opportunity, turn left (behind the railway crossing), leave the road and enter L288. Follow this road to Hachenburg.

Directions

At the information point, take the path into the Burggarten. After about 60 m turn left onto the path and always follow the blue lion's paw signs. Leave the Burggarten to the right at the upper wall opening. Pass the landscape museum, cross Leipziger Straße at the pedestrian crossing and continue left, then immediately turn right into Adolphweg. After 200 meters there is a steep section! After the steep section, cross Borngasse at the pedestrian crossing and turn left. Immediately turn right into the street "Am Schwimmbad". At the end of the street, in front of the boating pond, turn left into Birkenweg. Continue straight ahead into the forest. Pass the Kneipp foot bath to the right. Here you have a view depending on the weather conditions to the Siebengebirge near Bonn.

Behind the water tower (the historic one is on the left side) continue to the right. Turn left at the next intersection and after about 40 meters turn right again. Cross Gehlerter Straße (caution!) and continue on the forest path into the Rothenbachtal. Turn right at the first junction, pass the brewery spring (left side) and after about 350 meters turn left to the "Rothbachgrotte". Cross the Rothenbach and follow the path (steep trail character) for about 300 meters to the edge of the forest.

Here cross Steinebacher Straße. Turn into the street "Vor der Heck" and immediately take the forest path on the left side next to the garage. Pass a Marian image and follow the trail markings to the tarred road in front of the Altstädter grill hut. Turn right and follow the street to the Altstädter Bergkreuz. In this area you have very good panoramic views of Hachenburg and the surrounding area.

At the Altstädter Bergkreuz, follow the grassy path either left or right of the electric fence to the street "Am Hebeberg." Keep right to the "Bergstraße." Then turn left, cross Steinebacher Straße and after the mailbox continue on the footpath to "Bleichstraße." Always keep left on Bleichstraße until you reach the Altstädter "Mühlenbrunnen" on the right side. Continue to the next intersection and then turn right to the brewery. Alternatively, a detour can also be made to the "Bierpark" of the Hachenburg brewery.

At Gehlerter Weg, change sides at the pedestrian crossing and then continue left; after about 70 meters continue on the footpath to the right. Pass the old "ice cellar" of the brewery until you reach the parking lot of the children's house. Pass the parking lot to the right and immediately at the end of the fence continue on the sidewalk on the left side to the "Lohmühle" at the Löwenbad.

Turn left into "Bachweg," continue about 350 meters straight ahead to "Johann-August-Ring," turn left here and immediately turn right onto Steinweg.

Through Wilhelmstraße (pedestrian zone) to the "Alten Markt."

The "Alten Markt" with lion fountain is the baroque, historic center of Hachenburg. Leave Alten Markt to the east past the Protestant church on the left or right to the intersection Borngasse - Leipziger Straße – Alexanderring. Here begins the Burggarten. After about 150m to the left, the start and finish point is reached again.

Safety instructions

  • Visiting the beer garden of the Hachenburg brewery is at your own risk. The beer garden is free of charge and open at all times.
  • Wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold, wetness, heat, and sun.
  • Bring sufficient fluids. There are not always opportunities to stop at restaurants or cafés.
  • Please wear appropriate hiking shoes on the path that provide sufficient grip even on slippery, steep, rocky, or uneven paths.
  • If you find some sections impassable, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.
  • Particularly in autumn, fallen leaves can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes on the path. You should expect such trail obstructions during your hike.
  • Although the trail is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons always carry a suitable hiking map.

Equipment

Light hiking shoes or sturdy footwear (running shoes) are sufficient.
