Description

The circular route leads from Selters to the seven ponds of the Westerwald Lake District and back. In Selters, I visit the MU*SE museum with its old tools. I can hold them myself and imagine the life of people in the past. In Maxsain, I look at the Protestant church in the town center. Then I continue towards Freilingen. Here I like to make a detour to the Helleberg observation tower between Weidenhahn and Düringen. Afterwards, I cycle through nature and animal protection areas to Wölferlingen. Here, too, there is a Protestant church from the 18th century. A little further on awaits the Wölferlinger Kopf, the highest point of the tour (430 meters). A detour to the seven ponds of the Westerwald Lake District and a rest at the forest playground in front of Steinen provide relaxing moments. Behind Steinen, a wonderful view opens up. Finally, I visit the castle ruin “Schmanddippe” in Hartenfels before cycling back to Selters.

Approach

Motorway exits:

BAB 3, Cologne - Frankfurt: Dierdorf
BAB 3, Frankfurt - Cologne: Ransbach-Baumbach
BAB 45, Dortmund - Frankfurt: Dierdorf
B8, East - West: in Höchstenbach onto B414, turn left onto L305 (signs to A3/Frankfurt/Selters/Herschbach/Freirachdorf)

Directions

I start in Selters at the intersection of Bahnhofstraße and Rheinstraße. Then I go through the town, over the tracks and into the forest to Maxsain. The route mainly offers field and country roads, on which I make good progress despite various climbs. I pass Freilingen and reach Wölferlingen. Here, too, there is another steep climb. I take a long left curve over the Wölferlinger Kopf and thus make my way back. The forest and lake landscape is a feast for all senses as well as the wide view to the Siebengebirge which awaits me behind Steinen. Gradually, the road descends. Via Hartenfels, Rückeroth and Goddert, I reach Selters again. I do not miss the chance to look at the Protestant church in Rückeroth, which dates from the 13th century. The large linden tree in front of it is also worth seeing. On the main street in Goddert, I take a final look at the fountain.

Safety instructions

Very good condition required.

Equipment

For bags and backpacks on a bike ride, space is not only on the back – the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed across several body and bike parts. Wind, rain, or sun can cause very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can be best avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day tour, you should always have appropriate change of clothes on hand to be prepared for every eventuality. Besides other important equipment, necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speed, you can quickly take a wrong turn on a bike ride: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or a GPS device serve for orientation. You should always have a small emergency kit with you as well.

Tips

I take swimming gear with me because a swimming break is possible at the seven ponds along the way. In addition, I find some inns on the route.
