Description

You start in Neustadt and pass the cemetery and the school before heading towards Eilenberg. Even here, you have beautiful views over the surroundings. Then the path takes you through quiet forests, along small streams – ideal for a break.

You pass through the villages of Bertenau and Jungfernhof, then continue past meadows, cows, and fields. Large grain fields also accompany you for a stretch. Via Ammerich, you then return to Neustadt – with many impressions from the varied landscape of the Westerwald.

Approach

The parking lot and starting point are located next to the volunteer fire department in Neustadt (Wied).

Public transport

Take bus line 564 hourly to Neustadt (Wied) school center or Margerita Platz and start from there.

Parking

Free parking on the street "Im Schiefer" in 53577 Neustadt (Wied) next to the fire department.

Directions

Your starting point is in Neustadt (Wied) at the parking lot "Im Schiefer". From there, you walk along the street towards the school and then follow the path slightly uphill out of the town. You head towards Eilenberg. The climb is worth it – once at the top, you are rewarded with beautiful views over the Wied valley and the surrounding heights.

After Eilenberg, the path leads you into the forest. Here it becomes quieter; the path winds through dense trees and past small streams. The route mostly runs on natural trails and forest roads – sturdy footwear is recommended here.

You will soon reach the small village of Bertenau, which you cross. Then it continues to Jungfernhof, another small hamlet that is quiet and rural. From here, the landscape changes: the path leads you through wide fields and meadows. You pass by deer and cow pastures and can enjoy the open Westerwald landscape.

Further on, you hike along corn and grain fields – depending on the season, the crops are either tall or freshly harvested. Then you reach the district of Ammerich, which you also pass through. From there, a well-walkable path leads you back to Neustadt, where you arrive again at the starting point at the parking lot "Im Schiefer".

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wetness or heat and sun.
  • Take enough fluids with you. There are not refreshments available everywhere.
  • Please wear appropriate hiking boots on the route that provide you with sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
  • If you think certain sections of the path are not passable for you, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.
  • Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You must expect such trail impairments when hiking.
  • Although the path is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable hiking map.

Equipment

Hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing are advantageous
