Description

This Westerwald route from Linz on the Rhine to Diez on the Lahn takes me through many worthwhile places and landscapes. I pass through Raiffeisenland, named after the social reformer Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen. The historic mayor's house in Weyerbusch, the local bakehouse, and the Raiffeisen monument remind one of him. A little later, I come across the Beulskopf with the Raiffeisen tower near Heupelzen. I do not miss the subsequent visit to the pilgrimage church Marienthal. In Wissen on the Sieg, Schloss Schönstein and the Heister chapel await. Then I pass by Crottorf water castle and through the historic Wildenburg region. I can stop at Friedewalder Castle before cycling further towards Bad Marienberg with the Marienquelle spring and charming half-timbered houses. I now ride to the Fuchskaute, the highest point in the Westerwald, and past the Krombachtalsperre dam as well as several ponds to the idyllic Wiesensee. Finally, I spot the castle in Molsberg on the way before reaching my destination via several smaller towns.

Motorway exits:

Directions

The route is just under 224 kilometers long and sprinkled with some steep climbs. I start in Linz at the ferry (Rhine cycle path) and cycle along the B 42 to the north. Later, I reach the railway tracks, which I follow on the left and right. Only in Bad Honnef do I leave the Rhine, pass through an extensive forest area, cross the A 3, and further north reach Buchholz in the Westerwald. Behind Griesenbach, I come across the B 8, which I follow east to Birnbach in the Westerwald. Later, I cycle through Wissen and past countless small towns as well as Schloss Crottorf. Behind Busenhagen, the route bends southeast in the middle of the forest and takes me to Freudenberg. It continues towards Betzdorf and over numerous towns as well as the Fuchskaute to Rennerod. I pass the picturesque Wiesensee, cross Westerburg, and head south until I reach my destination in Dietz, the corner of Alter Markt/Pfaffengasse.

Equipment

For bags and backpacks on a bike ride, not only the back offers space – the weight of the equipment should preferably be distributed over several parts of the body and bike. Wind, rain, or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day route, you should always have suitable change clothes on hand to be prepared for every eventuality. Besides other important equipment, necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speeds, it is easy to take a wrong turn on a bike ride: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or a GPS device serve for orientation. A small emergency kit should absolutely always be taken along.

Tips

In Bad Marienberg, I visit the Apothekergarten and the barefoot path of the senses and enjoy new exciting impressions.
