St Mary's Chapel Greifenstein Elgershausen

Detailed description

Mary's Chapel, built around 1435 by Count Bernhard of Solms-Braunfels. Originally probably featuring a rectangular nave (community room) connected to the square choir through a pointed triumphal arch (choir arch). In the 19th century, a new floor and window layout was introduced, as well as a higher roof structure. In the preserved community room, two longitudinal beams rest on a pair of high octagonal wooden pillars. The chapel established itself as an important pilgrimage site and became the ecclesiastical center of the county.

After the Reformation, the site lost significance and was abandoned. By the end of the 17th century, it was used as a manor estate, which was leased starting in 1725. Southeast of the chapel, a manor house for residential purposes was built in 1756. The manor estate was leased until 1842. From 1835 to 1900, the manor served the chief forestry office, through which large parts of the surrounding arable land were reforested.

The lung sanatorium founded by Dr. Liebe initially moved into the existing buildings of the Waldhof in 1901 and was continuously expanded. Around 1918, the dining hall was added to the northeast of the manor house in a neo-Gothic style.

The building complex demonstrates the continuous use of the Waldhof site as an important pilgrimage site that was abandoned after the Reformation and was shaped by its repurposing into a manor estate and later as a clinic location. For historical reasons, in accordance with § 2 Abs. 1 HDSchG, it is a cultural monument.
