Notice
In the tour planner we inform you under the tab "Current info" about temporary route changes, closures and detours.
14 information boards convey information on various topics on a 7.5 km circular route. Some sections of the path, which lead through open countryside or over slopes, are not barrier-free (marked on the plan with a broken line).
Our path leads through the city in the northern area, past the Jewish cemetery and the Parc de Tarbes to the school center and into the pedestrian zone.
The southern stage then goes along the millrace on an idyllic path into the Wiesental, where the Wied winds through natural meadows. Past the war memorial and the Bismarck Tower, we pass through orchards with old and younger fruit trees, whose fruits are harvested and juiced in autumn by NABU Altenkirchen.
Now the path leads back down to the Wied and we learn in Bahnhofstraße about the influence of economy on climate change and what we can positively change ourselves here.
By car to 57610 Altenkirchen, where there are among other things parking options at the P + R car park at the station.
By train to Altenkirchen (station boards 10 - 12 can already be found directly at the station)
Timetables at www.vrminfo.de
free Park and Ride parking spaces at the station
Directly on the platform we find the information board for Station 11 (Mobility). We cross the station forecourt diagonally to the west and can inform ourselves at the boulodrome about "Living and Climate Change". Now we go up Friedrich Emmerich Street opposite the station building to Kölner Street and then turn right towards the city center. Just before the railway tracks, we turn left into Kump Street, which takes us to the former Jewish cemetery. Here we pass through the Parc de Tarbes to the Rural Youth Academy, where we briefly enter the car park and climb a few steps behind the small garage to discover Station 14 (Education).
Via Stadthallenweg and Dieperzbergweg we reach Siegener Street and follow it out of town to Glockenspitze Street. Between the grammar school and the secondary school we find Station 1 (Sport / Leisure).
We only follow Hochstraße briefly and then turn into a small street towards the southeast at the employment agency. It goes to a small retention basin where Station 2 on the topic of water and climate change is addressed. Via Parkstraße we reach the district administration and Station 3 (Municipal Administration).
Now we head into the pedestrian zone, where we have earned a little break and can visit restaurants or ice cream parlors. After Station 4 (Consumption) at the marketplace and Station 5 (Energy), the KlimaWandelPfad takes us along a millrace into the Wiesental. The extensive meadows in the Wied valley are also the subject of Station 6 (Agriculture). We cross the Wied river and walk past the fishing pond up to the socio-cultural center Haus Felsenkeller. From there we have a wonderful view of the city and learn from the information board of Station 7 that culture can also be related to climate.
Past the war memorial, we reach Station 8 with the topic Migration and a few meters further on, we stand in front of the Bismarck Tower, a landmark of Altenkirchen. The tower is maintained by the Bismarck Tower support association and can also be climbed on request and every first Sunday of the month (information at Bismarckturm-ak.de).
We reach a narrow cross street, which we follow a few meters to the left, then shortly after turn right to hike along a small path between a horse paddock and a forest area. We pass through orchards and learn a lot of interesting facts about biodiversity, CO2 sequestration, or the improvement of the local climate at Station 9 (Nature Conservation).
Then we go over the street "Zum Johannistal" back towards the city and soon cross the Wied again on Koblenzer Street. Behind the railway tracks, we turn left into Bahnhofstraße and a final information station shows us how economy and climate change are connected.
Interesting for groups: Two stations offer the possibility of evaluation and reflection “under a roof” during their respective opening times in case of bad weather: Station 10 (Regional store Unikum in Bahnhofstraße): seating for small groups up to 8 people and
Station 14 (Protestant Rural Youth Academy Altenkirchen in Dieperzbergweg): seating for small and large groups up to 25 people: outside (without roof) up to 16 people, inside only by arrangement at least 2 days in advance by phone 02681/9516-11.
In good weather, Stations 4 (Marketplace), 11 (Konrad Adenauer Square), and 13 (Parc de Tarbes) invite groups to follow-up and discussion outdoors.
The KlimaWanderPfad is currently not yet signposted, so please take a printed map or GPX data for the hike.
The route can also be hiked in two stages. For this, simply shorten back towards the station at the end of the pedestrian zone.
