Hüttenschulzehaus AlsdorfThe Hüttenschulzehaus in Alsdorf is one of the best preserved half-timbered houses in the municipality of Betzdorf.
An exterior tour is possible at any time.
In 1680, the manager of the then Grünebach Furnace, the Hüttenmeister Etdenneuer, built this house in Alsdorf. Since it was inhabited by the family from which several Hüttenmeister emerged, the name "Hüttenmeisterhaus" became established.
The building is a listed monument and can look back on a tumultuous past: For example, in 1743, the court assessors of the Freusburg district gathered in the Hüttenmeisterhaus. There, they wrote down what was still known to them from ancient times regarding orally transmitted law. This existed until the introduction of the Civil Code as "the particular legal marital property and inheritance law of the former Imperial Countship Sayn-Altenkirchen".
The porch, resting on wooden supports, makes the timber-frame construction of the building a special feature. In the crossbeam above the entrance door, one can find the following inscription: The house was built by Antthon Etdenneuer and Margretta, a married couple! God protect it from fire! Documents from Freusburg Castle already mention an iron works in 1471. Later, a copper works was added. However, the decline of copper mining led to its closure around 1780. The flourishing iron works, on the other hand, remained in operation until 1885. Another iron works was built in 1738 in the present-day municipality of Grünebach. This one had a competitive advantage due to lower transport costs following the construction of the railway in 1860/61 with the station in Grünebach. As a result, the iron works site in Alsdorf was abandoned. The decline of the Siegerland iron industry in the 1960s then led to its closure on July 12, 1963, thus ending the tradition of the Hüttenmeister in Alsdorf. Today, the quality hiking trail Druidensteig passes by the Hüttenmeisterhaus. Furthermore, it is a geotope in the National Geopark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus.
