Description

A picture like a painting: Maples, ash trees and elms bend at sharp angles over crystal-clear water that falls gurgling over mighty stones.

The area was declared a nature reserve by the Prussian authorities back in 1929 and protected as the "Holzbachdurchbruch" nature reserve in 1961. The basalt walls tower 20 to 30 meters high in the narrow, approximately 1-kilometre-long valley. Boulders, which are constantly coming loose, line the edges of the stream and give the Holzbach a pristine, wild appearance.

The vegetation in the gorge is also natural. The (predominant) non-interference of humans makes a decisive contribution to the preservation of the pristine landscape.

Experience the beautiful gorge on a wild and romantic adventure hike on the approx. 3 km long circular hiking trail with an informative bird and forest nature trail. Don't forget sturdy shoes!

The circular trail has been provided with signs about the bird species that can be found here, making the excursion into the Holzbach Gorge even more varied. Each of the signs provides information about a bird and has a QR code that makes its call audible.

Approach

Take the B54 through Rennerod to Waldmühlen. From here, take the L300 towards Seck and through the village to the Holzbachschlucht exit.

Safety instructions

If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not suitable for you, then you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on near-natural paths.

In autumn in particular, you should be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide uneven surfaces, roots, stones or holes in the path. You have to reckon with this type of path impairment when you go on a hike.

Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons or download the free "Experience Rhineland-Palatinate" app.

Equipment

Wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing that is suitable for the weather and protects you from the cold and wet or the heat and sun.

Take enough liquid with you. Refreshment stops are not available everywhere.

Please wear hiking boots that are suitable for the route and offer sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.

Tips

In the Hofcafe' directly at the Holzbachschlucht you can enjoy delicious homemade cakes and tarts.
