The Holzbach, which created the Holzbach Gorge, springs up not far from Rennerod. It flows around the villages of Waldmühlen and Seck and has formed the remarkable breakthrough valley about 300 meters below the Dapprich estate (between Seck and Gemünden).
Already in 1929, the area was declared a protected area by the Prussian authorities and was designated as the nature reserve "Holzbachdurchbruch" in 1961. Notably, the stream has carved its way through the covering basalt with its erosion power, grinding a fantastic gorge into the volcanic rock. The basalt walls rise 20 to 30 meters high in the narrow, approximately 1-kilometer-long valley. Rock fragments that repeatedly break off line the edges of the stream, giving the untouched, wild appearance to the Holzbach that is left to its own design possibilities. The vegetation of the gorge is also close to nature. The (predominantly) non-interference of humans in the natural processes of this nature reserve contributes significantly to the preservation of the primeval landscape. The gorge forest mainly consists of maples, ashes, and elms, and features a rich herb layer. On the slopes, there is a beech forest with soft grasses that soon transitions into a beech forest with pearl grasses.
Experience the most beautiful gorge of the inner Westerwald on a wild romantic adventure hike along the approximately 3 km long circular path with an informative forest educational trail (duration about 45 minutes). Don't forget sturdy footwear!
