Ice cellars are among the culturally significant small monuments that, however, often receive little attention.
The completely or partially underground structures were used for the storage and preservation of natural ice to cool numerous everyday products. It was only with the introduction of refrigeration machines at the end of the 19th century, especially in connection with the shift to refrigeration in large companies and breweries, that many ice cellars lost their significance and were abandoned. In rural areas, ice cellars were constructed until the beginning of the 20th century and were partially in use until the 1950s. Some ice cellars were repurposed as bat habitats.
