Description

According to Hermann Josef Ludwig Roth (theologian and natural scientist), the Protestant baroque church in Daaden, my starting point, is one of the most beautiful in Westerwald. I can trust Roth; he is considered one of the best connoisseurs of the area. In Biersdorf, a district of Daaden, I discover a mining cart on the town square. It recalls the history of mining in the region. There are also some half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as the stone house Alte Post from the 17th century. Today it is used as a community center and local museum. Then the route leads me into the forest, initially heading north. From my northernmost point, I make a small detour to Herdorf. From the train station to the Protestant and Catholic parish churches, there is a lot to see here. Then the circular route takes me south past the Hachenburger Höhe, the Kohlenberg, and the Igelshahn. Finally, I circle the Mühlberg and return to Daaden.

  • From Siegen: via Kölner Straße

Directions

The route is only 14 kilometers long, which can be completed in an hour without breaks. It runs on gravel, asphalt, and natural paths. There are only very short sections on roads. I start at the intersection of Lamprechtstraße and Oberdreisbacher Straße in Daaden. I head south and turn right "Am Silberberg" towards the forest. Now it goes through the Westerwald animal protection area. I make a large loop northwards towards Biersdorf. I cross the town from west to east and then find myself back in the forest. The route continues northward, and the ascent gradually begins. At the Hachenburger Höhe, it goes south again. At Kohlenberg, I reach my highest point at 450 meters. Then it goes downhill again towards Daaden, first slowly, then quite fast and in switchbacks. The short distance of the entire route is not too difficult for mountain bikers. Therefore, it is very suitable for beginners and nature lovers.

Safety instructions

For all fitness levels. Basic technical skills suffice

Equipment

For bags and backpacks, space on the back is not the only option during a bike ride – the weight of the equipment should preferably be distributed across several body and bike parts. Wind, rain, or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day trip, you should always have appropriate spare clothes on hand to be prepared for any eventuality. Besides other important equipment items, necessary tools and repair supplies should not be forgotten. At high speed, it is easy to take a wrong turn on a bike tour: Orientation aids such as a bike map or a GPS device are useful. You should always carry a small emergency kit with you.

Tips

In the south, between Daaden and Emmerzhausen, is Steinches Mühle, a beautiful half-timbered house that is occasionally open to visitors.
