Description

This route mainly focuses on the wonderful nature and the historically old villages with their beautiful buildings. The first document of Hof, where the route begins, dates back to the year 1048. On the main street, I am fascinated by the bell tower of the Protestant church and the stone bridge, both from the first half of the 19th century. South of Hof lies a glider airfield on the left. Sometimes you can see the elegant gliders taking off here. In Hellenhahn-Schellenberg, I find charming half-timbered houses and a wayside cross. A little beyond the village is the natural monument Seitenstein in the forest, a legendary basalt rock about 25 million years old, which I can easily climb. In Rennerod, I can refresh myself in various restaurants or cafés. If I pass through here three weeks after Pentecost, I like to watch the Hubertuskirmes. Later, I reach the Fuchskaute, the highest elevation of the Westerwald, which offers fantastic views.

Directions

This circular route is about 43 kilometers long and includes some ascents. Included are the Fuchskaute as the highest elevation of the Westerwald and the Stegskopf as the second highest elevation, which used to be a military restricted area. The route leads over fields and forest paths, gravel and asphalt roads. The starting point is at the northern end of Hof, the path first leads south through the town and into the High Westerwald. I pass through Fehl-Ritzhausen and wind my way on to Hellenhahn-Schellenberg. Then I cross the forest area with the Seitenstein and reach the larger town of Rennerod, which offers several places to stop. If it is too early for that, I follow the bends of the route to Rehe, where I can also refresh myself. From here, I gradually start the ascent to the Fuchskaute via Homberg. Then I pass Weißenberg and Liebenscheid before heading east towards Lippe. From here, with a detour to the Stegskopf, it goes south again towards Hof.

Safety instructions

Good basic fitness required.

Equipment

For bags and backpacks on a bike ride, not only the back offers space – the weight of the equipment should preferably be distributed over several body and bike parts. Wind, rain, or sun can lead to very different sensations of temperature while cycling – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day route, you should always have suitable change clothing at hand to be prepared for any eventuality. Besides other important equipment items, the necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speeds, you can quickly take a wrong turn on a bike ride: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or a GPS device serve for orientation. You should definitely always have a small emergency kit with you.
