Fuchskaute

Detailed description

In the Westerwald at the very top – the Fuchskaute near Willingen.

At 657 m, it is the highest elevation of the Westerwald. However, the Fuchskaute is not a mountain that stands out from its surroundings. It integrates quite modestly into the hilly landscape of the Westerwald. You really have to know that you are standing at the highest point here.

The Fuchskaute nature reserve covers 40.2 hectares and was designated as a protected area in 1984. It is located on the southeast slope of a gently sloping mountain summit.

The area has become known for its abundant arnica populations. Arnica is the star of the Fuchskaute. Tens of thousands of these plants grow here. A visit is especially worthwhile during the flowering period in July. Arnica is also a well-known medicinal plant. However, there is much more to discover: Molinia meadows indicate former grazing areas. Large parts are covered with cross flowers. Typical residents include various orchids, the forest hyacinth, the dog violet, and gorse. In addition, there is a large stock of heather juniper.

The wildlife around the Fuchskaute is also abundant. No fewer than 34 bird species are native here, including meadow pipit, red-backed shrike, and brown whinchat. Five species of frogs, slow worms, lizards, and grass snakes can also be found here. The area is rich in butterfly species: 20 of the butterflies found here are considered endangered in Germany. Very rare specimens include the violet-edged copper and the scabious butterfly, while the admiral, peacock butterfly, and emperor moth are seen more frequently. In fact, some animal species can only be found here in Rhineland-Palatinate! Along the “Arnica Circular Path,” various information boards provide details about flora, fauna, and history.

Parking: Unfortunately, the parking spaces at the former hotel at the Fuchskaute can no longer be used. Parking is available at the sports field in the neighboring Waldaubach. Alternatively, parking can also be found in Willingen at the village square. As a parking option for the hiking trail R3 "Auf der Höhe," the hiking parking lot on K38 between Liebenscheid-Weißenberg and Rabenscheid can be used.

Brief description

657 meters above sea level - it really can't get any higher than this - not even in the High Westerwald.
