Historische Johanneskapelle Ewersbach

Detailed description

In 1937, the parishes of Berg- and Straßebersbach merged to form Ewersbach, which is now home to two medieval churches. The church originally built by Martin and Margaretha was a medieval church with a square choir. The character of the church is reflected in its northern side wall and the low entrance portal in the south. The construction of the church has parallels to the parish church. The floor of the church contains a cross-ribbed floor with two bays, which was broken in 1827 due to earthquakes. The church also has an old piscina (baptismal font) with a drain.

With the introduction of the Reformation, the chapel suffered a lasting loss of function. The previously regular masses, including for the deceased, and the distribution of alms to the needy, both of which were made possible by numerous pious donations, were stopped and the furnishings were sold. Services were only held from time to time for older members of the congregation. In 1826, the parish of Straßebersbach just managed to prevent the chapel from being demolished due to the aforementioned structural damage. After 1945, it served as a place of worship for the Catholic parish until the consecration of the new church (30.8.1959).

It has not been used since then and was therefore finally handed over to the political community by the Protestant parish in 2001. The inclusion of Ewersbach in the Hessian village renewal program (2002) made it possible to thoroughly renovate the listed building. To improve the spatial effect, the 17th century galleries were raised and some of the old stalls were removed. Together with a modern extension, a functional metal and glass structure, the chapel now offers a variety of uses, e.g. as a registry office or for concerts, lectures and readings
