A true treasure trove: ore deposits, valuable spring water and a sophisticated forestry economy are typical of the local cultural history. On your route you explore ancient hollow paths, millennia-old iron smelting sites and refresh yourself with fresh spring water. Information boards at the edges of the historic forestry paths provide you with exciting background information.

You start from the hiking car park opposite the „Erzquell Brewery“ with an ascent on the yellow-marked access path. On a forest path running along the Sieg slope you reach the former Raben tunnel, the first opportunity to rest with refreshing spring water from the depths of the Giebelberg. The comfortable forest path winds further through tall deciduous forest and opens under an imposing rock face to a kind of prayer room in the green – the „Mariengrotto“. After several path bends you reach a traditionally managed coppice area with old hollow paths. Afterwards, lonely horse meadows in the Oehlsbach valley open up views of picturesque scenery. Back in the forest, individual giant trees on the ridge impress – they still mark the boundaries of the former coppice areas. A picnic area in front of the Erzquell tunnel (beer has been brewed from the tunnel’s spring water since 1885) invites you to rest. Due to the loss of spruce stands, the landscape is repeatedly characterized by bright areas of forest renewal. Information boards provide information about traces of La Tène period iron production. Above the Schindebach creek, relics of medieval mining can be seen – funnel-shaped „pits“ can be explored at the roadside. These consecutive depressions in the terrain are evidence of former ore mining pits. The route then leads downhill through the Schindebach valley back to the starting point.
