Dorfmuseum Niederbreitbach

Brief description

The local museum is located in the village of Niederbreitbach, Herrenhofstr. 2A.

Detailed description

The local museum in the village of Niederbreitbach (Herrenhofstr. 2A) is a former agricultural estate with a main house, stable, shed, and barn, as well as an oven.

The village museum displays the lifestyle and furnishings from the second half of the 19th century on a former gentleman's farm. It consists of a residential house, barn, courtyard, and barn and is listed as a historical monument.

The residential house contains six rooms; in three of the rooms, the history of Niederbreitbach is presented, while three showcase the living culture from earlier times. Additionally, the barn built in 1855 offers further space for exhibition purposes. Here, agricultural tools as well as tools from various professions can be viewed. The integrated horse and cow stable in the barn also houses utensils from that era.

Regarding the historical background of the house, it is said that the later gentleman's farm was presumably brought into the marriage with Count Heinrich III of Sayn by Countess Mechtildis of Sayn in 1250, as the farm belonged to the Thuringian possessions of her parents. However, after her husband's death, she transferred most of the properties to the Archbishopric of Cologne but insisted on keeping the farm. In 1468, the farm is mentioned in documents as "Kelterhaus" (wine press house).

The local support association contributes to the preservation and presentation of historical objects and facts.

Visits are also possible by prior arrangement.
