To the Tour PlanerThe city tour contains 18 stations steeped in history. Visit the museums in the Villa Grün and the Wilhelmsturm and learn more about the history of Dillenburg. The casemates, one of the largest defensive fortifications in Western Europe, are also worth a tour!
Dillenburg Castle was first mentioned in 1130 and received its town charter in 1344 from Emperor Ludwig IV the Bavarian. Dillenburg was the ancestral seat of the Oran branch of the House of Nassau. In the 16th century, Dillenburg Castle was built as the main residence of the Counts of Nassau-Dillenburg, which from 1536 onwards was simultaneously expanded into a contemporary fortress and given a strong, approximately 20-metre-high fortification wall, which still gives the castle hill its imposing appearance today. In 1760, during the Seven Years' War, the French fired red-hot bullets at Dillenburg Castle and destroyed it. In 1768, the fortifications were dismantled by demolishing most of the buildings and filling in the casemates. With the stones of the destroyed castle, a new government quarter was built in Wilhelmstraße.
