Hiking Trail
Route profile
Notice
In the tour planner we inform you under the tab "Current info" about temporary route changes, closures and detours.
The hiking trail is well signposted with the label W 3. A highlight of the route is the Asberg, an elevation at 334 m above sea level offering a beautiful view over the vast Westerwald. The locals affectionately call their local mountain the “Köppelchen.” Basalt was quarried here until the 1930s, as the mountain is volcanic in origin and consists of igneous extrusive rock.
A rotatable long-distance viewing marker shows us exactly which hills or places we can see in the distance. A binocular is highly recommended in addition.
A little further we reach today's border point of the municipalities Walterschen, Weyerbusch and Hemmelzen. Historical administrative borders of the Counts of Sayn, as well as today still valid parish boundaries of Birnbach, Flammersfeld, and Mehren, met here. The borders were often marked by hedges in the past, so it is no surprise that the small forest area at this border point is called “Thorheck.”
A multitude of benches along the way invite you to take a break and turn this beautiful landscape into an enjoyable excursion.
The circular route is located directly on the WesterwaldSteig. It can also be used with a bike, stroller, or off-road electric wheelchair. And if we don't want to hike so far: other field paths also allow for halving the route.
By car, we reach Weyerbusch via the A3 and the B 8.
The circular route can be reached via Altenkirchen by bus line 250, which also takes us to Weyerbusch on weekends.
Altenkirchen itself is accessible by train from both the Cologne/Bonn and Siegen directions.
Parking is available in the Weyerbusch town area, at the cemetery/fire station Weyerbusch (Finkenweg), or roughly midway on the circular route at the village community center Hilkhausen (Talweg 8).
From Weyerbusch, we follow the trail marker W3 towards Hilkhausen. On the way, we pass natural meadows and reach the Asberg viewpoint behind the village Hilkhausen. After enjoying the great view, we go downhill again to a small woodland called the "Thorhecke." From here, we can either return directly to Hilkhausen or follow the trail description to Hemmelzen. Two gastronomy establishments (Landhaus Stähler, Hotel-Restaurant Heisterholz) can be found here. Now we walk back towards Hilkhausen through the beautiful Birnbach valley, a quaint small village that now belongs to the town of Weyerbusch.
From here, the path leads up again through an idyllic hollow way towards Weyerbusch, passing meadows and orchard areas. From here, we once again have a beautiful view over the explored landscape and look forward to a cozy stop at one of the numerous gastronomy businesses in Weyerbusch.
There is gastronomy both at the start and at the "halfway" point in Hemmelzen for the hiking hunger.
