Description

Picturesquely situated in greenery, where the Eisenbach merrily gurgles and gives the valley its name, lies the Studentenmühle at the foot of the towering Bornkasten. The charming country hotel received its name from a group of students who were regularly catered to here by Duke Adolf of Nassau. There we eagerly mount our bikes and follow the signage via Kleinholbach to Girod, where we head towards Nentershausen through fields, forests, and meadows. The towers of St. Laurenzius Church announce themselves far and wide before we cycle to Nomborn. The community of "many fountains" lies charmingly nestled in the Nassau Nature Park and is one of the most beautiful villages in the Westerwald. The church of St. Kilian from the 15th century with its late Gothic Madonna of the Grapes is known beyond the region. On entering the square, you find ancient lindens that round off the remarkable village scene with its well-maintained half-timbered houses. Through the forest, it goes downhill into the rurally relaxed Gelbachtal – time ticks differently here – you notice that immediately. At the level of Bladernheim, we pass Sespenroth, where only a memorial plaque recalls the community that emigrated to the USA in 1853. The old stone bridge in Ettersdorf safely guides us through the meadows to Giershausen. From there, we pedal to Kirchähr, where a small refreshment in the café is offered before setting off into the Buchfinkenland. Idyllic forest paths and wide, gently rolling hill chains bring us to Gackenbach with its well-known wildlife and leisure park. Together with the community of Hübingen and Horbach, richly blessed with half-timbered buildings, they form the bracket of the Buchfinkenland. The name derives from the wooded region, which boasts a particularly high population of songbirds, especially chaffinches. Daubach is reached during an uphill and downhill ride, where the cozy "Dorfcafé" with homemade cakes invites you to rest. Fortified, we continue on the quiet country road to Stahlhofen. Along the pretty village church, we ride into the forest and speed down long slopes to Wirzenborn. On the right lies Reckenthal, where recently various artists created sculptures from mighty tree trunks that now line the way to the valley. Opposite the road through Gelbachtal lies the community of Wirzenborn, whose well-known pilgrimage church was built in 1498 and houses a Madonna dating back to the 14th century. The motorcycle museum next to the cozy inn "Wirzenborner Liss" enjoys great popularity with an exhibition of old motorcycles that delights not only the hearts of motorbike enthusiasts. We cycle through the village into the forest, follow the beautiful path to the "Bildches Eich", a small pilgrimage chapel in the middle of the forest. Just a few pedal turns separate us from the starting point, the Studentenmühle, which we easily reach via Großholbach.

  • Gackenbach: Wildlife and leisure park, parish church of St. Bartholomäus and Sebastian
  • Horbach: Half-timbered houses
