Description

The castle paths 1 - 3 lead you on the most beautiful trails around the Reichenstein castle ruins in Puderbach. Various activities are offered along the edges of the paths waiting for your exploration.

All three castle paths lead past this castle dating back to the 14th century. Tours can be booked at the Tourist Information in Puderbach (02684-858160). During your hike, you might visit one of the recurring events in the Puderbach area. Whether the castle festival, concert in the shadow of the castle, or for example the Steimeler Potato Market – these crowd-pullers lie directly on the castle path. We are happy to inform you about upcoming events (www.puderbacher-land.de).

Further highlights along the castle paths include the art exhibition in the rooms of the Bruchhäuser Foundation in Steimel, the nature experience trail, and the football golf course in Daufenbach (path 2), the pond system in Linkenbach, as well as parts of the Grenzbach valley (path 3).

Approach

The Verbandsgemeinde Puderbach lies in the northeast of the Neuwied district, right in the heart of the Westerwald in Rhineland-Palatinate. The ICE train stations Montabaur and Siegburg/Bonn can also be reached quickly via the A3.

You can reach the Puderbacher Land by taking exit 36 - Neuwied on the A3 motorway and following the signs to "Puderbach."

Parking

We recommend Puderbach as the starting point, as all three paths meet here. Our route descriptions always start at the parking lot at the school bridge on Barentoner Straße in Puderbach. Since the routes are marked in opposite directions, the path can of course also be walked the other way around.

Parking lot:

Barentoner Straße 11, 56305 Puderbach

Directions

From the starting point, the three castle paths (1+2+3) still run together. The castle path leads uphill from here towards Steimel. Upon arrival in Steimel, the path passes by the "Haus Neitzert," where artworks by Karl Bruchhäuser can be viewed (www.bruchhaeser-stiftung.de). It then continues over the marketplace, where the nationally known Steimeler Potato Market takes place in autumn. From there, the path continues through the forest towards Reichenstein. The path leads directly past the Reichenstein castle ruins. The ruins can be visited by prior arrangement (www.burgruine-reichenstein.de). In the locality of Reichenstein, castle path 1 separates from paths 2 and 3. The path continues through the forest before reaching open fields above Puderbach. From here, there is a great view over Puderbach and beyond. Then it goes back into the town of Puderbach to the starting point of the hike. Castle path 1 has a length of approximately 10 km.

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate, practical clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun.
  • Take enough fluids with you. Refreshment options are not available everywhere.
  • Please wear hiking shoes suitable for the path, providing you with enough support even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
  • If you think certain sections of the path are impassable for you, you should avoid them. In particular, with adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.
  • Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. Expect such trail impairments when hiking.
  • Although the path is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable hiking map.

Equipment

Hiking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
