By bike through "light and shade around Selters"

Description

The almost 20-kilometre cycle tour "Light and shade around Selters" starts off easy and then increases moderately in the final stages. It takes me around an hour and a half, mainly on gravel and natural paths through unspoilt countryside and pretty villages. At the end, I enjoy the long descent through a beautiful wooded area. Shortly after Marienrachdorf, the two forest lakes invite me to take a break. There are more lakes above and below the path to Rückeroth, to which I make a detour or two. The small villages offer me an idyllic picture and I enjoy the ride through them. In Rückeroth, I stop at the village church and marvel at the peculiar shape of the ancient lime tree next to it. It has been designated a natural monument and used to serve as a court lime tree.

Directions

I start my tour at the market square in Selters and follow Saynstraße for around 450 meters along the edge of the town and on through the meadows. After crossing the Saynbach stream, I turn left shortly afterwards into Rückersteg. After 375 meters I turn right, past the Alter Hof district and after about 400 meters I reach a fork in the road. I turn left into a wooded area and about 90 meters to the right. I follow the path through the forest for around 600 meters and then turn left at a crossroads. After a good kilometer, Sessenhausen is directly in front of me. I keep left and follow the path "In der Dasbach" for about 400 meters until I reach "Krümmeler Weg". I follow this to the right until I reach the end of the village. I turn left and reach the Sessenhausen cemetery. At the traffic circle, I take the second exit. After around 200 meters, I turn right. I cycle 2.2 kilometers through the countryside, crossing the country road and a railroad line, and after a right turn I come directly to the village square of Marienrachdorf. I cycle out of the village via Bahnhofstraße and Turmstraße and turn right after 800 meters just before the Irrlicht farm. After 700 meters through meadows and forest, I reach the two forest lakes. I leave the second lake on my right and turn right at the next junction towards Rückeroth. After 500 meters I pass the cemetery and after crossing the road I reach the village of Rückeroth after another 400 meters. I keep straight on until I reach the church. I follow Oberdorfstraße, then turn left into the street "Auf der Höhe" and after two houses turn right to the street "Herschbacher Weg". After 100 meters, I follow Oststraße for a few meters and turn right into the street "Im Gebück": I cycle along this, out of the village and continue for 2.7 kilometers through a wooded area and past fields until I turn right just before Hartenfelser Straße. After 500 meters, I turn left again and then right again after another 100 meters. I follow the cycle path for 1.5 kilometers to Maxsain. There I take Rückerother Straße to the left and after the bend turn right past a parking lot. After 100 meters I reach the main road. I turn right, after a few meters turn left and follow the Steinchesbach on Alleestraße until I reach Kirchweg. There I turn right to Schönstraße, which takes me out of the village in 400 meters. After 1,200 meters uphill, I turn right and cycle almost three kilometers downhill to Selters. I return to the starting point of my tour via "Alter Weiher" and Rheinstraße and Kirchstraße.

Tips

In Selters, I visit the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Westerwald and have the choice of stopping off at various restaurants around the market square.
