Nature lovers get their fill here. “Unique in the Westerwald,” says habitat manager Markus Kunz from Hachenburg.
The dam belonging to the district of Waigandshain is a special gem with rare animal and plant species. The name dates back to the abandoned settlement of Breitenbach, which was located between Waigandshain and Emmerichenhain, below the current dam. This settlement was already abandoned in 1565. The last residents settled in Waigandshain, which is why the district was assigned to the neighboring village. In a description from 1843, the pond measured 76 morgens and was thus the largest standing body of water in the former Nassau district of Rennerod. The body of water is first mentioned in 1569. It served the local nobility as a fish pond. The management was in the hands of fishermen and pond diggers. In 1675, the pond supplied three quintals of carp to the court in Hadamar. After 1791, many of these fish ponds were drained to produce hay. However, the Breitenbach pond was initially exempted from this. As late as 1828, it had an area of 75 morgens. In the second half of the 19th century, however, it was eventually drained. In 1952, the area came into the possession of the municipality of Waigandshain. It was to serve fish farming again, was dammed again starting in 1963, and the first fish harvest festival took place on October 17, 1964.
Since 1977, the Nistertal Emmerichenhain 1969 fishing club has been the tenant of the Breitenbach dam. Anglers still enjoy this idyllic spot on earth - just like nature and hiking enthusiasts.
