Description

The N1 hiking trail is the longest of the marked circular trails in Neustadt (Wied) and impresses with a varied route through forests, meadows, and wide views over the Wied valley. The route is ideal for an extended half-day or full-day hike and offers several opportunities for rest and nature observation along the way.

Approach

The parking lot and the starting point are located next to the Catholic church in Neustadt (Wied).

Public transport

Take the bus line 564 hourly to Neustadt (Wied) school center or the Evangelical church and start from there.

Parking

Free parking spaces next to the church or down at the parking lot next to Misto´s and the sports field. (Raiffeisenstraße 9, 53577 Neustadt (Wied))

Directions

The hike starts in Neustadt at the church. From there, you cross the bridge and follow the path towards Berschau. Afterwards, you continue on a long, paved section towards the monastery and Mettelshahn – several benches here invite you to take a short break.

Then the path leads through the village of Fernthal. From Fernthal, you continue hiking towards Hombach. Shortly before Funkenhausen, you pass the Gube Ferdinand and continue your way towards Funkenhausen.

After Funkenhausen, you proceed past fields and meadows towards Scharenberg and Gerhardshahn East. From this point, the hiking trails N1 and N4 run together, so you follow the same path to Ammerich and Neustadt (Wied).

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy footwear as well as weather-appropriate, suitable clothing to protect you from cold and wet or heat and sun.
  • Take enough fluids with you. There are not always places to stop for food or drink.
  • Please wear appropriate hiking boots that provide sufficient grip even on slippery, steep, rocky, or uneven paths.
  • If you think certain parts of the trail are not passable for you, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather, natural paths may have muddy and slippery sections.
  • Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You should expect these kinds of trail impairments when hiking.
  • Although the path is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable hiking map.

Equipment

Hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing are advisable.

Tips

Take a break on the many benches and enjoy the view.

At the end in Neustadt (Wied), you can stop for a delicious meal at Eiscafe Silberlöffel, Pizza Works, Misto´s, or Bei Valentino.
