Kranstein

Brief description

Basalt Quarry Kranstein

Detailed description

The Kranstein near Weltersburg is the Geotop of the Year 2020 in the Geopark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus.

It is one of the most impressive basalt outcrops in the Westerwald. The cross-section of the fan-shaped, stone volcanic vent reveals how the magma rose from the Earth's interior about 25 million years ago. Studies of the basalt rock and the minerals expelled during the volcanic eruption allowed conclusions to be drawn about the nature of the Earth's crust, which is up to 30 kilometers thick. In the Geopark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus, the Kranstein is one of the highlights.

How to find the Kranstein

On County Road 95, which runs from Willmenrod to Weltersburg, the site is located slightly hidden behind trees on the left side. However, the entrance is visible from the road. Slow driving is recommended here anyway. Signposts provide information about the Geotop. A bench invites you to rest.
