Description

This varied circular hike has it all: you hike through tranquil villages, explore the Marienberger Höhe with its juniper heath and hike to the Hölzerstein hill. You will return through the former quarry and today's Bacher Lay nature reserve with a basalt wall worth seeing and flora and fauna rich in species.

Brief description

The Bad Marienberg circular hiking trail M5 leads over the Marienberger Höhe to the Hölzerstein hill near Nisterau and back through the Bacher Lay nature reserve.

Approach

- From Cologne: A3 exit Hennef/Sieg via B8 and B414 to Bad Marienberg.

- From Frankfurt: A3 exit Limburg via B54 and B414 to Bad Marienberg

- From Dortmund: A45 exit Haiger/Burbach via B54 and B414 to Bad Marienberg

- From Giessen: A45 exit Herborn via B255 and B414 to Bad Marienberg

- From Koblenz: A48 and A3 exit Montabaur via B255 to Bad Marienberg

Public transport

Nistertal/Bad Marienberg railway station, bus no. 483 or 962 to Bad Marienberg, Neuer Weg bus stop.

The bus only runs Monday-Friday!

Parking

Free parking at the Tourist Info, Wilhelmstraße 10, 56470 Bad Marienberg

Directions

First through the spa park and further past the roundabout before leaving the built-up area and reaching the forest. Then the trail climbs up to the juniper heath and continues towards the television tower. Two road crossings follow, once the L294 and later, shortly before the district of Pfuhl, the K60. Through the village of Nisterau you reach the Hölzerstein hill. The path then leads back to the village and then through the Bacher Lay nature reserve. Back in Bad Marienberg, the trail passes the Marienquelle spring and the Protestant church before returning to the starting point.

Safety instructions

Especially in autumn, be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path.

Path impairments of this kind are to be expected on every hike.

Equipment

Sturdy shoes are recommended, as well as appropriate clothing for the weather, which protects against cold and wet or heat and sun.

Also take enough liquid with you, there are no refreshment stops along the way.

Tips

Picnic at the juniper heath, a heath-like biotope with insect diversity.
