Description

On this varied 10.1 km circular hike, everything is included: You explore the Marienberg Heights with the juniper heath and hike to the Hölzerstein hill. The return route goes through the former quarry, now the Bacher Lay nature reserve, with its impressive basalt wall and diverse flora and fauna.

Approach

- From Cologne: A3 exit Hennef/Sieg via B8 and B414 to Bad Marienberg

- From Frankfurt: A3 exit Limburg via B54 and B414 to Bad Marienberg

- From Dortmund: A45 exit Haiger/Burbach via B54 and B414 to Bad Marienberg

- From Giessen: A45 exit Herborn via B255 and B414 to Bad Marienberg

- From Koblenz: A48 and A3 exit Montabaur via B255 to Bad Marienberg

Public transport

Train station Nistertal/Bad Marienberg, bus no. 483 or 962 to Bad Marienberg, stop Neuer Weg.

The bus only runs Monday to Friday!

Parking

Free parking spaces at the tourist information office, Wilhelmstraße 10, 56470 Bad Marienberg

Directions

First through the spa park and past the roundabout before leaving the built-up area and reaching the forest. Then it goes uphill to the juniper heath and further towards the TV tower. There are two road crossings, the L294 and later shortly before the district of Pfuhl the K60. Through the village of Nisterau you reach the Hölzerstein hill. Then the path leads back into the village and then through the Bacher Lay nature reserve. Back in Bad Marienberg, it goes past the Marien source and the Protestant church back to the starting point.

Safety instructions

Especially in autumn, you should be aware that the fallen leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path.

Disruptions of this kind can be expected on any hike.

Equipment

Sturdy footwear is recommended as well as weather-appropriate, practical clothing that protects against cold and moisture or heat and sun.

Also take enough fluids with you; there are no opportunities to stop for refreshments along the way.

Tips

Picnic at the juniper heath, a heath-like habitat with a variety of insects.
