In the tour planner we inform you under the tab "Current info" about temporary route changes, closures and detours.
At first, I come across the magnificent Krombachtalsperre dam. Here I take the opportunity to swim. I pass the Knoten (581 metres), the highest point on my route, and continue to Mengerskirchen. Here, in the tower of the former castle, now a palace, is a local heritage museum. Otherwise, the building is used as a town hall. A short detour takes me to the Adolf-Weiss monument, where I like to rest. The path passes the Seeweiher pond (also a swimming option) and goes through an extensive forest area to Mittelhofen. These are various protected areas, including the Fauna-Flora-Habitat wetlands and heaths of the High Westerwald. On Kapellenstraße stands a Catholic chapel from the late 18th century. North of Westernohe there is a Wendelinus chapel as well as a nature-protected juniper heath to see. Finally, in Waldmühlen, there is, among other things, a cast-iron fountain from the 19th century. Throughout the ride, I enjoy the wonderful wide views typical of the Westerwald.
Public transport connection: only buses to Rennerod or Mengerskirchen, no bicycle transport options
Parking facilities in the town centre of Rennerod
For the roughly 33 kilometres, I estimate about three hours without breaks. It tends to go mostly downhill at the beginning, but there are some ascents at the start and towards the end of the route. You ride on pleasant farm and hiking paths. I start in Rennerod at the hiking car park "Strohheck" and cycle on a former railway track towards Rehe. I reach the large Krombachtalsperre dam, which lies on the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. I will cross this border again further south on the way back. Behind Driedorf-Mademühlen, I first pass the model airfield and some farms and then reach the so-called Langmauer, the old Rhine road. There follows a long ascent up to the edge of the forest, then I cycle past wind turbines to the Seeweiher pond. Here the R8 cycle path offers a connection to the Kerkerbachtal cycle and hiking trail and the Lahn cycle path. On the way back, there are some forest roads and later a cycle path alongside the road to the destination Rennerod.
Good basic fitness required.
For bags and backpacks, a bicycle tour offers not only the back as space – the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed across several body and bike parts. Riding wind, rain, or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day tour, you should always have suitable change clothing at hand to be prepared for any eventuality. In addition to other essential items, necessary tools and repair equipment should not be forgotten. At high speed, you can quickly take a wrong turn on a bike tour: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or GPS device help with orientation. You should also always carry a small emergency kit.
In Rennerod, I have a choice of various excellent restaurants. I also like to order a dessert at the De Luca ice cream café.
