Alter Bahnhof Ulm

Brief description

The replica of the waiting hall of the Ulmtalbahn offers cyclists and hikers refuge from bad weather. Even in good weather, it is a brilliant resting place with a wonderful view.

Detailed description

The Ulmtalbahn ran along the route of today's Ulmtal Cycle Path in the last century. Between 1921 and 1976, it operated as the legendary Balkan Express from Stockhausen (Lahn) to Beilstein (Dillkreis) and back. Steam locomotives and rail buses transported passengers and local raw materials over a considerable height difference of 245 m.

The rugged landscape of the Westerwald, into which the workers skillfully fitted the tracks, perhaps reminded one of the character of the Balkans in Southern Europe (Karl May: “Through Wild Kurdistan”). Thus the Ulmtalbahn received its name "Balkan Express."

The route of the Ulmtalbahn is now used for the approximately 21 km long Ulmtal Cycle Path. The covered rest area is modeled after the original waiting hall of the Ulm Station, where no tickets were sold but which provided travelers with protection from wind and weather. Today, the waiting shelter serves the same purpose for cyclists and hikers. In good weather, the nearby picnic area is a brilliant rest stop with beautiful views.
