Description

The path leads over the heights of the High Westerwald through forests and across meadows.

Right at the starting point, you enter a historically significant area, where it was not always as peaceful as it is today. The Salzburger Kopf consists of two elevations, Galgenberg (645 m) and Saalberg (653 m). From here you have a wonderful distant view and in good weather, not only the Westerwald elevations further south in view, but even the Feldberg in the Taunus. Even during the Thirty Years’ War, court was held here for the Westerwald region. At the nearby Galgenberg, death sentences were carried out.

From this historically significant place, the hike passes Westerwald villages to Fuchskaute - the highest elevation in the Westerwald - and back to the starting point.

Directions

From the starting point at Salzburger Kopf, the trail marker VR1 leads over the K35 onto a meadow path to Galgenberg with a great view. Through the small village of Salzburg over a bridge to the left towards the cemetery, across meadows and through forests to Zehnhausen. There the B54 is crossed and the path leads through the forest towards Waigandshain. From there through the wind park and after crossing the B414 towards Fuchskaute. Through Willingen and Bretthausen, the path leads back to the starting point.

Safety instructions

If you believe that certain sections of the path are not passable for you, you should bypass them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections.

Especially in autumn, care must be taken as fallen leaves on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You should expect path impairments of this kind when undertaking a hike.

Although the path is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always have a suitable hiking map with you or download the free app "Rheinland-Pfalz erleben".

Equipment

Wear sturdy footwear as well as weather-appropriate, practical clothing that protects against cold and moisture or heat and sun.

Take enough fluids with you. Not all places offer refreshment options.

Please wear hiking shoes suitable for the path that also provide sufficient grip on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.

Tips

If there is snow in winter, the ski area at the Salzburger Kopf ski slope with lift facility is an ideal destination for families with children for skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and sledding.
