Description

Explore the beauty of Secker Weiher, Wiesensee, Hahner Waldsee, Seeweiher of Mengerskirchen, and the Krombachtalsperre. Each lake invites you to linger and swim. Remember your swimwear! The Krombachtalsperre and Wiesensee are the largest lakes, but the smaller ones also offer campsites.

Discover gems along the way such as the Trachtenmuseum, the railway museum, and the Erlebnisbahnhof in Westerburg. Admire the over 100-year-old train station in Rennerod and charming details like the cast-iron fountain in Waldmühlen or the chapel in Eisen, which are worth a short break.

Conquer the Knoten (between Oberrod and Arborn), with over 600 meters one of the highest elevations of the High Westerwald and at the same time the climate divide between the High Westerwald and Hessian Westerwald. Explore picturesque villages, numerous rest opportunities, and of course the wonderful nature by bike.

Directions

Start your route at Westerburg train station. The town offers a wide range of shopping opportunities.

Follow forest paths to the southernmost point of the first lake, the Wiesensee. A café at the so-called Winner shore invites you to rest with a wonderful view. The WällerLand tourist information offers informational material and treats to browse. Ride along the lake to the town of Pottum, located directly on the lake.

Then cycle for a longer time past small forests and meadows until the second lake follows: the Secker Weiher with a campsite. Past the Haus Waldesruh, continue to the towns of Seck and Waldmühlen.

The route leads along the B54 to the Rennerod tourist information and through the town of the same name. Then ride to the Krombachtalsperre, the third lake.

Via Mademühlen, go up to the “Knoten” and through Mengerskirchen. The fourth lake, the Seeweiher of Mengerskirchen, follows directly. Via Neunkirchen and Irmtraut, you reach the valley of the Elbbach, through Langendernbach and past Wilsenroth train station.

From the Hessian Dorndorf, you come via Bilkheim to Wallmerod train station. Here begins a former, quiet railway trail. Through Berod and a longer forest area, the Eisenbachwiesen nature reserve, you ride past fields and see the Meudt clay pit on the left. Past the towns of Meudt and Eisen, cycle past a forest area on the right and reach Ehringhausen.

Then cross the B8 and ride through the town of Hahn am See. Here awaits the fifth and last lake of the route: the Hahner Waldsee with dining options and a campsite. Afterwards, you reach Elbingen and turn left again onto the railway trail. Now relaxingly cycle seven kilometers until you arrive back at Westerburg train station.

Safety instructions

Very good fitness required.

Equipment

For bags and backpacks on a bike ride, not only the back offers space – the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed over several body and bike parts. Wind, rain, or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike – a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day route, you should always have suitable change clothing ready to be prepared for any eventuality. Besides other important equipment items, don’t forget the necessary tools and repair supplies. At high speed, one can quickly take a wrong turn on a bike ride: for orientation, traditional and modern aids like a bike map or a GPS device serve. You should also always have a small emergency kit with you.

Tips

The nearly 80 kilometers can be completed in one day. Plan enough time for detours, for example towards the north to the Fuchskaute.
